I’m not sure if this photo really constitutes a monument, but to me it represents a monumental moment, so in that way it might just fit the bill. It’s a photo of me taken on my phone, by a complete stranger, in front of the statue of Eros in Piccadilly in London last year. The reason why it’s so monumental is that I was on my Big Adventure, travelling on my own from Australia to England, Denmark & Sweden, for 4 weeks with just my backpack. Yes I was staying with friends and family along the way, but essentially I was on my own. I organised my trip all by myself including riding and walking tours, accommodation, flights etc and had a ball. This may be a normal event for young 20 something’s but for me, in my early 50’s and unused to travelling without my husband, it was quite monumental. I certainly missed my husband but was amazed at how well I managed, and believe me, I had some ‘interesting experiences’!! He was also amazed and proud of me, and I suspect quietly envious.
