Black and White challenge #4

Kites at the beach
Kites at the beach

Day 4 of the 5 day Black and White photo challenge – kites flying at the beach.

Despite liking black and white for some things this is an example of what I don’t particularly like.  I think the colour version is a much better photograph by virtue of the colour! It shows the sunny day, the blue sky, the white sand and the colourful kites whereas the black and white photo is missing something – colour!!!

Does this make sense to you? What do you think, or am I missing something?  I tried to edit the black and white photo to give it some edginess and contrast but I’m afraid it just doesn’t do it for me.

(By the way the colour photo hasn’t been edited at all and was taken on my iPhone.)

I’m enjoying looking at photos differently since undertaking this challenge.  In case you missed my earlier photos here are the links: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3.

Only one day to go – what will I choose for my final day?  Stay tuned 🙂

  1. Well I am a fan of color! Having said that, my first thought was “cool photo” when I saw the B&W! It really looks like a photo from the past! It made me wonder about who the people “were.”

    1. Thanks for your thoughts. I’m glad you told me you ilke the photo in B&W because I wasn’t sure about the post and even using this photo at all. Now I’m glad I did! I always wonder about people in photos too!!

    1. Thanks for your comment Julz! I had a comment on my facebook link to this photo and would like your thoughts. “Comparing both the colour photo and your black & white photo – the colour one is possibly a fraction over exposed therefore when you convert to black & white it becomes more over exposed, the white became very white. Also black & whites seem to be better if they are simple photos.”
I actually edited the black and white one to look more over exposed to make a statement and to also learn the limitations of black and white over colour.

    1. I agree with you Sue and really only put that photo in to show my learning along the way, of the nature of black and white photos and what I liked about it and what I didn’t. I’m not at all experienced in photo technicalities and just know what I like.
