I love nature – it’s so alive and yet it can be so contradictory. It is capable of being beautiful yet devastating; colourful yet stark; simple yet so complicated. A bit like life itself really!
This photo was taken at Mt Jagumba, where bushfires have ravaged the area over recent years. These trees are all dead, ghosts of their former selves. As you hike to the top they are all around you. Mt Jagumba is part of the main range of Australia’s Snowy Mountains, in the Kosciuszko National Park (in New South Wales). There are many more areas just like this all over Australia.
I think that these trees are hauntingly beautiful in their own way. I do love dead trees though!
To me, this verse from Dorothea Mackellar’s poem ‘My Country’ sums up the forces of nature in Australia. It’s full of great descriptions about our beautiful country.
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!
This week’s photo challenge calls for a photo depicting a force of nature (there are many more beautiful photos shared here if you click the link).
This week, share a force of nature from your corner of the world. It can be something as large as the Grand Canyon, or as small as the tiny seedling steadily breaking is way through the concrete in your driveway.
Bushfires and their resulting destruction are definitely a force of nature.
Deb 🙂
You’re right, Debs. There are some great blogs and some lovely people ‘out there’. I’ve enjoyed spending a little time with you this evening. 🙂

I didn’t even think of bush fires. Great post. And I’ve always loved that poem too. I never knew who wrote it.

Glad it surprised you! It was written in about 1908 after she’d been in England and it was all about the things she missed about Australia. I love it!

The poem catches the essence of the photo, Debbie. Starkly beautiful.

Thanks Jill, I felt the same way. I wanted to include the poem the minute I read force of nature as this week’s challenge theme. It sums it up well. Glad you like it too.
