Weekly photo challenge: on the way (home)

Where to start with photos for interpreting this week’s challenge of ‘on the way’?

I started by thinking of some of our recent trips and came up with these ideas:

Our cycling trip in Croatia last year where every day gave us a new destination that we had to ride to with amazing stops and views along the way?  We would have missed most of the views had we been in a car or a bus but because we were riding we really experienced everything as we worked hard to get up (and down) the huge hills. Or the sailing from island to island in between the days of cycling. Or our everyday walk in the forest just behind our house, with the bareness of almost winter, but with the gorgeous green moss and the orange fungi brightening up the otherwise mundane walk?  Find some unexpected beauty in a mundane moment. Today’s walk was no exception with the grey/brown kangaroos blending in with the grey/green gum trees and the bright green, yellows, reds of the parrots buzzing by – except I wasn’t fast enough to capture them! On the surface I think of it as mundane and everyday but there is always beauty waiting to be noticed.

Or the mountains of Nepal beckoning us on each day with the amazing locals smiling and welcoming us to their beautiful country? Walking each day and finding unexpected waterfalls and sights like this around every corner. This trek in the Annapurna Sanctuary was all about the journey and I’m so fortunate to have been able to do it, despite my love/hate relationship with heights, bridges, edges and other such scary things!

Or the sign that tells my daughter she’s on her way home after she’s spent days flying halfway around the world. She always gets us to slow down so she can take a photo out of the car window as she knows she’s close to home when she sees the signs. The big blue sky, the colours, the bare hills in the distance, the name on the sign, they all say Australian summer and home to her.  There is nothing similar to this in England, a place which she also calls home.

For this week’s photo challenge, stop and photograph the metaphorical roses (or the literal tulips). Share a shot of something you saw, did, or experienced on the way: a photo not of your destination, but of an interesting thing along the way. Show us something stunning others might have missed, or find some unexpected beauty in a mundane moment. Maybe we can all start looking at the in-betweens a bit differently!

So, as I couldn’t choose between them, I decided to use them all!

  5. This is a lovely post Deb and a great take on the theme. It was great to read about your travels. I can also relate to the last part about your daughter. Mine lived in London for 2 years and I cherished those few times she came home to visit. She’s now living back in Melbourne although I know if her visa had allowed it she would have stayed on in London for much longer.

    1. Thanks for your lovely comment Michelle. I enjoyed thinking about all the moments along the way to places. My daughter has lived over there for many years now but still loves to come home as often as she can. She relishes the long drive home from either Sydney or Melbourne airports as it eases her back into touch with her Australian side and gets her senses involved, if that makes sense! I’m glad you ‘got’ what I was trying to say in my post. 😊

  6. I’m wondering why you found it hard when you delivered such a well crafted and beautiful post!
    The photos and moments are different and enticing, making me want to visit these places.
    I particularly like the last one about your daughter’s return home, as this is a familiar emotion in my life, felt every year when I visit my parents.

    1. Lucile, you always make me smile with your comments. I love reading them! I think I found it hard because I had so many thoughts on what I could do and which photos I could use, and so I had to make decisions whereas I usually just have a single response to these challenges and just go with that first thought. This one made me think and flesh out the post in my mind before committing to it. I am pleased with the end result and especially as you can relate to the last photo. That one was my favourite too! Thanks again.
