MOB update #3 – Trials and chook runs

Update #3 from Mother of the Bride (aka MOB)

There are now just 33 days to go until THE WEDDING.

My daughter, B2B and fiance G2B, and two of the beautiful bridesmaids have just been and gone!  We had  a weekend jam-packed with all things wedding related. As they all live a long way away (with one bridesmaid still in England), it was a rare opportunity for us all to get together, in the family home, to discuss the plans.

B2B had organised their trials – hair and makeup to the uninitiated – and we had a full schedule of visits planned. We were organised, took notes, asked questions and taste-tested our way through the day.  We also managed to get the bonbonniere all sorted – it was full on!

We haven’t been able to organise an Australian Hen’s party due to distances involved, so the weekend was the closest we came to it.  The bridesmaids had thoughtfully bought a ‘Bride to Be’ tiara and sash and cleverly presented it to her as we were driving to our first appointment of the day, as there was no escaping.  B2B was less than ebullient in her enthusiasm for such items but to her credit she did wear them throughout the weekend, with some gentle prompting required from time to time. Luckily some of her English friends had taken her out while she was over in UK recently, so I don’t think she has missed out on too much. But what would I know – I can’t remember the last Hen’s party that I went to, or even if I have ever been to one!!

I, on the other hand, will admit to being very excited to receive my ‘Mother of the Bride’ badge, which just happened to match the dress that I was wearing, and I conveyed said excitement by clapping my hands and squealing, while still managing to keep the car on the road (I was the driver!).

Chook run: Now this requires concentration so read carefully…..in Australia we call chickens ‘chooks’ and a hen is a type of ‘chook’.  As we were having a sort of a ‘hen’s party’ weekend I dubbed our early morning walk/run a ‘Chook run’. We all got up very early, just after sunrise, and headed up into the pine forest for a healthy walk/run to start our day.  It was a warmish morning even at that hour, with a hint of the heat that was to come later in the day, and it was crisp and clear. The snow was still visible in the distance on the main range, the kangaroos were jumping around, rabbits were running across the path and the birds were laughing.  What bliss!! We felt good when we returned for breakfast after doing a distance of 6km. The girls got up again the next morning and repeated the chook run. So that’s the ‘Chook run’ part of my post title explained!

As you may know from my previous MOB updates,  the B2B, is also due to finish her Masters degree, just days before the wedding. She assures us that she has it all under control and I believe her –  if anyone can do it, she can!! G2B has been great helping with decisions and choices and most importantly with supporting B2B with the writing of her dissertation.  You can tell that he is getting excited for their big day too.

So what else has been happening?

Lots of things have been purchased, lists made, programs deliberated upon, readings discussed, seating plans, accommodation lists, flowers, aisle decorations, music, speeches, delegating of jobs….all this (and much more) for just one special day.

Luckily I love my daughter to bits or it mightn’t be so much fun!

My husband, FOB, is still quite cool, calm and collected and is a very good influence on B2B when things get a tad stressful. We have bought him a new suit and he will look very dapper on the day. We have been very busy in the garden, and it’s looking lovely!

Following on from my last update MOB update #2, you’ll be pleased to know that I went ahead and had a trial spray tan and am thrilled with the results.  I kept it a surprise from B2B and I’m not sure what she really thought as there was much eyebrow raising going on. I’m a fan!

I will admit to having spent many hours trawling Pinterest and the internet for ideas and have learnt a lot in the process. There is so much out there, so many things that I had no idea about!

All in all the trial weekend was a success with lots of decisions made and discussions had.  There are still lots of things to do but I’m confident that it will all fall into place.

So my MOB journey continues….not long to go now!

PS. I couldn’t help but think of this week’s photo challenge theme of Boundaries while writing this post: Boundaries impose limits on us, whether they’re social constructs or real, physical objects…They’re there to stop us from doing or saying what we actually want to. But they also give structure to our actions and frame our movements. Being the Mother of the Bride requires an awareness of one’s boundaries and I am learning a lot!
