What’s that in your back pocket?

Happy New Year to you all!!  I hope it’s a good one for you.

I’m now back from my little break from blogging and have many stories to tell and adventures to share. I also have lots of reading to catch up on so bear with me!

But first things first…I went for my first run of the year this morning – yay me!! Here I am looking all red in the face after my run but I’m still smiling! (I didn’t realise I had such a tan mark on my arms until I saw this photo!)

As I left the house for my run my ever cautious husband passed me a bandage telling me to carry it in my back pocket.  It’s in case of a snake bite!  I’m supposed to administer first aid to myself in the event that I get bitten by a snake then make my way back to the house!  I always run/walk in the forest near our house and have to walk about 300 metres through the paddock of long grass to get there.  I then weave my way around the various tracks depending on whether I want a long run or a short quick workout. There are usually kangaroos, rabbits, wombats, foxes, birds and of course snakes also using the forest and generally we all get on just fine.

I wonder how many other people carry a snake bite bandage when they go out for a run? If you do, please let me know by leaving me a comment.

It’s been very hot here lately so I decided not to leave it too late in the day to go out, otherwise I might not get around to it. I’m slowly getting back into running after my calf injury in August last year and have been riding, walking and running intervals trying to get back into it. I’m currently using the couch to 5km app to get me going again. In December I managed about 150kms of combined activities plus some gym workouts so I’m not doing too bad. I also love using my new wireless headphones that my husband bought me for my birthday, after he checked that they don’t reduce all noise.  I need to be able to hear traffic and people speaking to me when I’m out and about apparently – did I mention that he’s cautious?

I also have a funny thing happening – my resting pulse rate is quite low, in the low to middle 50s. I don’t consider myself all that fit to be classed as a top performing athlete with such a low resting pulse rate so I’m determined to find out what’s happening.  I know that running is one of the only ways that increases my pulse in any great way. Thanks to my Fit Bit HR I’m now keeping track of my steps, exercise, sleep patterns and pulse rate.

All the best to you all for a happy and healthy 2016.  I aim to continue the year as I have started it.  I’ll keep you posted.

So what do you carry in your back pocket when out for a run/walk?

Deb 🙂

  1. Happy New Year, Deb!
You asked if anyone carried a snake bite bandage with them when they went out for a run… well, I can tell you that I don’t. I don’t actually go out for runs, truth be told, which would mean me getting somewhere closer to being fitter – but good for you. It’s always best to be prepared!

  2. I have a snake bite action plan which I hope to never enact. Mine is to take off my running singlet and use that as a compression bandage and then call for help with my trusty smart phone. All our snakes in Tasmania are deadly but if a victim can remain calm and still and use compression they should survive. Tell you husband you’ll just go topless if you’re bitten Debbie 🙂 Good job on your run and Happy New Year.

    1. Haha! Love it Annie 😊 my husband is very impressed with your plan of action and forethought. It wasn’t a terribly long run but at least I’m back out there again. Hope your year is a happy one.
