How to embarrass your 3 daughters in 1 post – Musings on Monday 1 May 2017

Welcome to my weekly Monday Musings

I have a confession to make – this is my very first ‘How to..’ post!  Not because I don’t know how to do things but because I don’t feel qualified to offer anyone advice, about anything.

While out riding my bike today I had a great post fill my head, it was sensational, pithy, witty and full of interesting advice to my myriad of readers who hang off my every word!

But, as per usual, when I finished my ride all I had were sweaty armpits, a sore bottom (I forgot to wear my padded pants) and an empty head.  I blame it on the happy endorphins that flooded my body as I negotiated a complex mountain bike track through the bush and managed to stay upright throughout it all. Maybe I should write a post about How a middle-aged retiree can ride a mountain bike without falling off.

This desire to write a how to post came from reading an interesting post from Janice, a blogger who writes regular posts about how to improve your blogging and despite my recent foray with reading advice blogs which resulted in I admit to being confused , I read on.  Her post is here and while I respect her advice on all matters of blogging, I can’t help but have some fun too.  I’m sure she’ll understand 🙂

I also love reading Suzie’s advice on blogging and found this one very soothing after my recent ‘rant’ post on the subject – Things that bloggers need to stop getting stressed about.  I recommend you reading this if you ever find yourself getting stressed with any aspect of your blogging journey. It reminds me that blogging means different things to different people.

I often tell people that I blog about my travels, my family and other events so that when I’m old and have forgotten everything I’ve ever done, I can go and read all about things this girl called Debbie has done, and get to enjoy it all a second time!

Don’t get me wrong, Janice’s advice is spot on for those who are keen to build a base and make money and contacts from their blogging.  She works hard to ensure her advice is up to date and relevant and she reads constantly about blogging.  I admire her efforts immensely.  I’m honest enough to know that I’m in a completely different blogging place.  I still like to read these types of post as I always pick up something useful.  Obviously her post worked because not only did I read it, I am now using her advice!

Some of the tips in her post included using the words how to in the title, use the date, use numbers and to offer readers something – so following her advice I’ve managed to write a great title which has sparked your interest and now you’re stuck reading it.  You could say I’m writing this for research purposes!

I’ve just realised that the ‘how to’ part of my blog is a bit light on if I’m being honest, I’ve probably misled you with my title – oops!

So what am I going to tell you that will embarrass my three daughters?

If you know my blog at all, you know I write about my family and my three daughters ad nauseum.  But as it’s their special month and I have a history of writing posts for their birthdays, here’s this year’s bulletin.

You see I was clever and had all three daughters within 5 weeks of each other, obviously not in the same year!  When they were little it was fantastic, as sibling jealousies were averted because they each knew they would be getting presents too within a short time. Our first daughter was born towards the end of May, our second daughter was born in early May and our third daughter was born in early June.  So all birthdays were over and done with in a short space of time. My husband’s birthday is in January and I’m in December so we are nicely arranged for celebrations throughout the year.

Now they are grown up it hasn’t changed that much, it’s still a hectic time of finding suitable gifts for them.  I like to embarrass them on Facebook with old baby photos and a funny blog post or two!

So this year I’ll combine my post with a story about all of them.

When they were little we had a friend who made the following statement about our three very different daughters:

  •  One of them would have their heart broken.
  • One of them would break hearts.
  • One of them would break balls.

He actually named which girl each of these observations related to but I won’t kiss and tell! Suffice to say it proved to be quite true and it’s stuck with me.  Despite the fact two of them are now in their early 30s and the youngest is turning 29, I still love telling this story!!!  I also love seeing them in photos from a years ago, they were so cute!

They are beautiful, clever and generous girls and I hope they enjoy my birthday post 🙂

Home is where the heart is

Last week’s Musings on a Monday post saw me ready to return home after spending time with family up north.  I was home for 4 days and unpacked my bags, caught up with friends, attended my husband’s official retirement dinner and repacked my bag before we headed down south to see my parents-in-law for the indefatigable Ruby’s birthday.  We are definitely not sitting still very long in our retirement!  We will head to the nation’s capital later in the week for our daughter’s birthday and then home for a week or so before our next trip.

This was the view from our verandah on the weekend , a brief moment of pure gold.  I really love Autumn.

Blogging updates:

My favourite post for last week was (again) my response to Writespiration the 52 word challenge.  I continued using my ‘wedding’ theme (with a twist) and you’ll have to go read it if you need to know more –  The prompt was the bitch was right and my post can be found here.

I enjoyed Wordless Wednesday with a photos of a plane swimming across the lane ropes and the Weekly Photo challenge prompt of Wanderlust seemed very fitting to me. I also responded to a post from Donna, about changes she’s noted in herself since she retired.  I was going to write a comment but decided it deserved more and ended up writing a whole post from my perspective – A new me or an upgraded version. It has opened up a whole new world to me and I enjoyed all the comments left in response.

I think that’s the best bit about blogging – the interactions, the comments, learning new things from others and reading so many talented people’s writings.  I enjoy comments immensely and although we all get busy with our lives I get more from reading a comment than anything else.

Mondays are for musing and mulling over the week so feel free to join me.

I’d love to know what you’ve been up to.

  1. My brain, too, has become an idea sieve! Every brilliant thought slips right out. It’s so frustrating! Meanwhile, any time you can can embarrass three kids at once, is a win!

  2. Wow those are close birthdays! I have my kids perfectly spaced – 4 months between christmas & eldest’s birthday, 4 months between eldest’s & youngest’s birthday, four months between youngest’s birthday and christmas. Growing up though, in my family we are all winter birthdays – sister late december (right before Christmas), dad january, me and my mum February.

  3. I know I already commented once on this, but this time reading the post made me think that I do the opposite…I embarrass my mom’s in my blog!! It’s only fair, right?

  4. I hear you with blogging advice. I think a lot of it is great but you can get overloaded with what you feel you are suppose to do to get views and forget what you intended to do with your blog in the first place. I got caught up in that as well. For a while blogging wasn’t fun anymore because of it. I have since changed my outlook. I think if you write from the heart, bring people into your world and your mind then readers will enjoy it, even if you make nothing from your blog. Thank you for sharing your story. I plan on embarrassing my children a ton. I think I have already started. Lol.

    1. I’m so glad you can relate to what I wrote about in regards to blogging advice. I read things then dismiss most of it as it doesn’t suit my style. I’m with you, write from the heart and if people come by to read it then all well and good, if not, it’s no skin off my nose. I do it now because I enjoy it so much and surprisingly others seem to enjoy it too 😊. My daughters are used to me embarrassing them and if I didn’t do it, I think they’d wonder what was wrong with me!! Thanks for stopping by 👋

  5. Hi Deb Your post gave me a bit of giggle on a few levels this morning over my breakfast.i had to come back now and reread it and finish it off. Love the title and the advice. The description of you on the bike and getting ideas I could relate too.( oh and it was funny too) However I could relate to falling off rather than managing to staying on the bike. I wrote a post on that one,,,actually two. the second time I came off and hurt myself quite a bit. The photo of you and the girls is lovely and I love the three statements about the girls, talk about gold.
Enjoy your time in Canberra. i love it up there but my FIFO husband is back home to stay, at last so no more breaks up there in the foreseeable future. Louise

    1. I’m glad it gave you a giggle! I remember your posts about riding your bike. I’ve done over 100kms in the last few days – we did over 40km in Canberra yesterday, it was a gorgeous day! I’ll be back there next weekend for the Mother’s Day Classic before we head to Tasmania for tow weeks – so busy!!!! Thanks again for support and comments 🙂

  6. I love this story, these pictures and the fact that you ended your bike ride with an empty head. That seems like the point of a ride to me. I would question the list about your girls though. Won’t they all have their heartbroken at some point. And break hearts and break balls? There is a little of each of us in everyone else. I don’t think we can ever be perfectly captured…

    1. Yes I agree the whole point of getting out and riding, running or whatever, is to clear one’s head and I love it for that reason. You are right, there is all of those things in everyone. Thanks for visiting and leaving me a comment 🙂

  7. Oh, what a wonderful and entertaining post. I love your blog, this is what I would really call a PERSONAL BLOG! Although the idea of probably ‘losing it’ when we are getting older is one of my worst fears, your statement made me giggle a bit. Yes, how great will that be, going through your own blog in 25-30 years time 🙂 and your grandchildren will probably have the ‘debs-world-app’ on their mobile devices. Funny, I just wrote a post about ‘diaries now and then’ , that blogging the new way of writing a diary is. Here’s the best proof for that. Great blog!!

    1. I LOVE the sound of the Debs-World app – great fun! What a fantastic comment you’ve left me again! Yes my blog is a personal blog and I love it that way. I will go and look at your post about diaries and try to leave you a comment that will make you smile just like you’ve made me do today 🙂

  8. Lovely post Debbie! Funnily enough I wrote a How To post for the first time this week!
It made me smile when you mention your children’s birthdays are all in May – 3 out of 5 of my children have birthdays in Dec/Jan – my eldest on 24th Jan; youngest on 31st Jan; middle one on 31st Dec – what with Xmas it is an expensive time of year! My daughter (2nd eldest) was born in April; my birthday is in May; my 4th child and my husband are both in August.😊

    1. Thanks for sharing Linda, it’s been great having everyone visit and leave me such lovely comments. I’ll pop over to read your how to post now, I’ll bet you did a much better job on it than I did!

  9. I don’t even have the excuse of riding a bike to forget all the “brilliant” posts I’m going to write! Seriously though, I love this post. You have deftly woven in so many strands. Do enjoy your next round of travelling!

        1. Su Leslie – great analogy! And great post Debbie! Love your conversational post! So warm and entertaining. And not rambling! Seems as if you know where it’s going, even if only the writing reveals it! I love it when that happens!

  10. Autumn certainly is beautiful, I love the richness of the colours. Your daughters all look lovely and no doubt a credit to you, despite your efforts to embarrass them! Mind you, isn’t that part of our job as mothers?

  11. I’m with the girls here – I write my blog for pleasure and for connection. I never realized how many friends I’d make through it and how encouraged I’d be by all these wonderful Midlife bloggers. I’ve read a lot of Janice’s stuff and I have the utmost respect for the time and effort and research she puts in, but for me it’s not about teaching anyone anything, or about money, or popularity (although a hugely viral post would be rather nice!) I’ll just stick with doing what I love and hopefully I’ll keep wanting to do it for a long time to come. BTW you do have a lovely smile – definitely a superpower 🙂

  12. I agree with the comment above from Sue; for me blogging has never been about making money or achieving the highest number of readers but about connecting with people from all around the world, sharing thoughts and feelings and understanding how alike we all are no matter where we are living. Keep doing it just as you always have, your blogs are a treat to read and each time I feel like I know you a little more

  13. I’m like you Debbie when I’m running I get all of these great blogging ideas and then by the time I get home I’m too busy trying to recover to remember my great ideas. Yes blogging can be very much like a roller coaster and all the ‘do’s and don’ts’ that we read constantly. I’m happy just writing my thoughts and getting to know my readers and other bloggers in a continuing communication rather than a ‘like and run’ BTW isn’t our job as mothers to embarass our children? LOL:) Happy birthday to them all.

    1. Thanks so much Sue for the birthday wishes and your comments. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who has so many good ideas while out exercising, it’s so good to have time to think. There are too many do’s and dont’s with blogging so I’m choosing to ignore them all 🙂 Hope you are recovering from your cruise, sounds like a great time,
