A Wonder Woman week – Musings on Monday 19 June 2017

Welcome to my weekly Monday Musings

A wonderful week end with Wonder Woman:

I haven’t managed to write a Musings on Monday post for a few weeks as I’ve been away, but you can read all about our trip to Tasmania in my recent posts if you’re so inclined.  I still have a few to update!

I have been busy lately and I’ll fill you in on a few things that have been going on.

I finished the week in Canberra watching the wonderful movie Wonder Woman with my husband, daughter and son-in-law.  Despite being nicknamed Wonder Woman Debz a few years ago, I haven’t really known much about Wonder Woman, except to know it was a great compliment to be so named.  Well I can now say that I’ve seen the light and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I won’t say too much in case you haven’t seen it yet, but I will say it was loads of fun, action packed and I liked her attitude a lot!!

We are all Wonder Women

Great quotes from the movie include:

Diana – It is our sacred duty to defend the world. And it is what I am going to do.

Etta Candy – The sword doesn’t go with the outfit.

Steve Trevor – My father said, “When you see there’s something wrong with the world, you can do nothing or something.” And I’ve already tried nothing.

Rotary Youth Exchange Program:

Another way I’m trying to make the world a better place, is with my Rotary International membership.  I have been involved in Rotary for many years and feel that Rotary is making a real effort in many areas around the world and in local communities.

One such way is the Rotary Youth Exchange program which sees young students apply for the opportunity to live in another country for a year, usually on the other side of the world.

Rotary Youth Exchange Australia provides an opportunity of a lifetime for Australian high school students to live & study abroad.

You’ll spend up to 12 months living and studying in a foreign country, learning a lot about yourself and the culture of your adopted host families.

I have just spent the best part of the weekend, with fellow committee members, interviewing and selecting suitable students for this program in 2018.  This was a very hard process as there were many more students wanting to go on exchange than places for them overseas.  The students were involved in interview panels, group activities and their parents were also interviewed.

The parents fund the year away with Rotary providing the support and training to help prepare the students in having a safe and enjoyable year.  It’s definitely not a holiday and some students are just not  ready for what’s involved.  These students were from 14 to 17 years old!  I know I wasn’t ready to undertake such a life changing experience at that age so I am in awe of their confidence and maturity.

All I can is that we had a torrid time making the selections despite following a proven method. Today I had to ring one of the fortunate student to inform him of his success in the process  I really feel for those who missed out. From now until the end of the year we will be involved in training the students for their year away from home.

Rotarians throughout the world are all volunteers and give freely of their time to be involved in youth programs, community events, international aid and many other areas like the End Polio campaign –  with the aim of making the world a better place – just like Wonder woman!  I’m proud to be a Rotarian.

From other Bloggers:

Sue from Sizzling towards Sixty and Beyond has a great blog featuring lots of topics relating to fitness, health and wellness. This week she has invited 5 women over 50 to share their top tips for staying fit and fabulous.  I just happened to be included and you can find the post here 5 Women over 50 share their  favourite health and wellness tips.

I have also been a guest blogger for Sizzling towards Sixty and Beyond and you can read the expanded post here – Mental Health.

I always have a laugh when my daughter in UK posts about her summer experiences and this week she has written a comparison of a UK summer vs. Australian summer.  It’s a great read (and not just because she’s my daughter!)

Mondays are for musing and mulling over the week so feel free to join me.

I’d love to know what you’ve been up to.  How are you changing the world??

  2. I love this! My biggest “WHY” in terms of why I do what I do is to make this world a better place. I served in AmeriCorps for two years and now try to share my love for civic engagement with my children on a regular basis.

    1. I’m not sure about that Jodi but I do know there’s a lot of everyday heroes out and about that we rarely hear of. I’d much rather learn about them than read about celebrities who do little to enhance the world we live in.
