For those of you following along at home here is Week  8 of our 52 week photography project, with the theme Old fashioned/Vintage.

Despite taking photos of old things along the way on our outback trip , they just didn’t feel right.  So I was running out of time and struggling to find something to photograph that suited the theme. My husband had even joked that I wasn’t allowed to take a photo of him to use – I must admit I actually considered it at one stage!!

But at the last minute, while at our local cinema cafe for the monthly Movie Club night, I saw this bowl of herringbone ribbons for sale.  I really don’t know what they’re used for, except I’m guessing craft of some sort, and being from a bygone era and photogenic, I quickly took a snap of them and voila! Never let a chance go by is my motto!

My words: These ribbons are so old-fashioned even I don’t know what they’re used for! I’m thinking craft??  I love the colours, the setting and the display. They just say old-fashioned to me.

We enjoyed an assortment of olde worlde items this week in the project – along with my ribbons we had an old Weetbix tin from Alison found at a local market; an amazing photo of a drink called an Old-Fashioned from Daniel (and great words); an old Grey Fergie tractor from Grant, which suited his tall, elegant, grey style; a vintage lighthouse from along the English coastline from Melanie; an old box of silver cake forks languishing in the bottom of a drawer with lots of memories attached from Sharon; and a delicious looking (and sounding) old fashioned Neenish Tart from Tim.

We all agreed that our unique takes on the theme continued this week. I think my favourite was Alison’s vintage Weetbix tin.  Her shot was sparse, clear and evocative, complemented by her words.  You’ll have to click the link to go and check them all out.

What’s the story behind the 52 week photography project?

I have joined with 6 photographers, of varying experience, to take a photo every week for a year, one theme at a time. That’s 52 weeks of photos!

I’ve been assured it’s all about creativity not necessarily photographic expertise. I am enjoying the challenge of looking for suitable shots as soon as the next week’s theme is announced, it takes over my thinking until I’ve taken my shot and sent it in. Then I can relax a bit!

It’s turned into a bit of a family affair actually with my sister, my brother-in-law, my nephew, my husband, my daughter and a close friend of my sister’s.  You can read more about us all here on the About page.

Each week for 52 weeks…

Each week we are given a new theme and must take a photo, add some words and submit it to Tim (brother-in-law), who will compile a post on Sunday night.  He then tells us our next theme…and so on for 52 weeks! We all enjoy a bit of a comment session after the post goes live which is always fun.

This is the first time I’ve been involved in this project but some of the others are on their second time round. At the end of the previous project they produced a beautiful coffee table book with all the photos and words included from their weekly submissions. It’s a magnificent record of a year in photos.
