52 week photography project – Week 12: The Kitchen

Source: Week 12: The Kitchen

Week  12 of our 52 week photography project had the theme of The KitchenI don’t think I’ve ever taken a photo of my kitchen before, so it just shows there’s a first time for everything.

We have a large kitchen which is part of our large sprawling open-plan house.  The house is just as comfortable for my husband and I to live in, as it was when our three daughters were at home, although it is a tad quieter these days.

Once you are inside the house, you are a part of everything, due to its open style.  We have a verandah around the whole house and can choose to sit in the morning sunshine out the front or in the afternoon sunshine out the back.

If I’m being honest, I’m not a domestic goddess, I know that will shock many of you! I like the kitchen for its functionality and its position. I’m not that good at being domestic despite my mother’s best efforts.  I usually just do what I have to do and get out.

To get this shot of my kitchen I climbed onto the timber bench and stood up as straight as I could so that I could get this angle of being near the ceiling and looking down into the corner. In reality I was scared stiff I was going to fall off (as I don’t like heights) and the ceiling was still way above me.  I got just the shot I was hoping for. I have been accused of using a selfie stick for this shot, but I can assure you I did not!

This week’s photos were another great mix showing a variety of kitchen themes.  We had shots of an empty and very clean kitchen, due to moving house; the contents of the fridge in the kitchen; a restaurant kitchen nicely framed from the outside looking in; chopped vegies and lovely thoughts to go with it; a pot stand who likes hanging around in the kitchen and my husband’s unique take, a puzzle where all the answers were kitchen related.  You’ll just have to click the link to go and check them all out to see what I mean!

Are you a domestic goddess?  I sometimes wish I was more into cooking and creating but I’m quite happy with my limited repertoire, adding new dishes every now and again.

What’s the story behind the 52 week photography project?

I have joined with 6 photographers, of varying experience, to take a photo every week for a year, one theme at a time. That’s 52 weeks of photos!

It’s turned into a bit of a family affair actually with my sister Sharon, who takes amazing photos of flowers among other things; my brother-in-law Tim, who takes gorgeous shots of everything; my nephew Daniel; a talented photographer; my husband Grant who started photography back in the old days of film and DIY developing and processing; my daughter Melanie, who is a travel blogger and photographer; as well as Alison, a close friend of my sister’s who is an experienced wedding photographer. You can read more about us all here on the About page.  I especially enjoy the regular contact it gives us all too and the connections we make each week.

I’ve been assured it’s all about creativity, not necessarily photographic expertise. I am enjoying the challenge of looking for suitable shots as soon as the next week’s theme is announced, it takes over my thinking until I’ve taken my shot and sent it in. Then I can relax a bit!  It’s also fun wondering what the others will come up with, you just never know what you’re going to get!

Each week for 52 weeks…

Each week we are given a new theme and must take a photo, add some words and submit it to Tim who will compile a post on Sunday night.  He then tells us our next theme…and so on for 52 weeks! We all enjoy a bit of a comment session after the post goes live which is always fun.

  1. Love the idea of “52 week photography project.” I am not much of a photographer other than using the camera on my IPhone. I’d love to get into photography one day. I do have a photography project that I started a couple years back (It’s on hold for the moment). It’s called the “100-foot journey” based on the movie of the same title. I love hiking. So, whenever I go to a new place, I took a picture of my feet against the nature backdrop. I think I am at “foot” picture # 50 something at the moment 😉

  2. Great shot Deb. It really is a perfect perspective. I am definitely not a domestic goddess. Although, last night I made a quiche and I started so late that my entire house smelled of bacon and onions (deliciously caramelised) all night. Gidget is going mad with the smell!

  3. Wow! That’s what I call ‘true dedication’ to blogging and photography. Hanging from the rafters (even almost) to get your shot takes real commitment….and guts! Your efforts turned out brilliantly!
