I came home from Europe a few years ago, full of ideas – garden ideas.

Of course the Mathematician was thrilled with these amazing ideas 🙂 but to his credit he came on board with the plans for the sunroom in the garden. Our climate here is just perfect for this garden addition.

Finding Zen in the garden

My zen place in the garden is my sunroom. I can see the garden, the paddocks with the sheep wandering around, I can hear the birds calling and watch the sunlight play through the trees. Our garden has certainly changed over the years!! We also have 18 acres of paddocks around us, a forest we can walk in just outside the back fence and a vineyard next door so it’s a lovely place to find some calmness in our lives.

Finding the ‘right’ sunroom

After some research we found a sunroom in kit form, made from polycarbonate panels, not glass. We ordered it and when it arrived I had the thought that it was just as well the Mathematician enjoyed doing puzzles, because it was exactly like putting together a jigsaw puzzle!

We had spent some time observing the trajectory of the sun during the day and had decided on the placement, in the back garden on a bit of an angle. The kit went up over a few days with some minor issues. I was useful holding the ladder and offering appropriately encouraging and soothing words. The furniture, consisting of a daybed, cane chairs and colourful cushions were moved in days later and the paving was done a few weeks after that. It all came together so well!

Various uses

The sunroom has had a variety of uses in the five years we’ve had it – a pool room, an entertainment room, a retreat, a garden area but mainly it’s just a delightful area in which to relax in. Any breeze is immediately cutout when inside with the doors shut, it’s a cosy zen-like world. In summer it gets far too hot to be in it but in spring, autumn and winter it’s fabulous!

Storm damage in February 2019

A ferocious storm nearly ruined the sunroom in February 2019, with panels blown out and the structure twisted and damaged, but luckily the Mathematician was able to reconnect all the bits. We’ve since decided to remove the garden area inside, as it gets too hot to keep anything alive, especially over summer. I may get some artificial plants in the future to brighten it up, but I’ve moved back in and taken up residence again 🙂

So when I want to relax, take in the nature, read, have a cup of tea, chat with friends, listen to music, chill out, blog…. this is where I go. We have power, wifi, blankets and a heater when needed, so it’s literally an all weather room out in the garden – and I love it!

It is light, comfortable, and about 25-30 degrees celcius in the middle of a winter’s day, whereas the outside temperature may be anything from 2-15 degrees. I love having this space to escape to. Please note I’m not a sloth, I do move around and don’t spend all day everyday on the day bed as you might imagine from reading my words 🙂

  6. It is a beautiful place your sun room. I am glad you got the specialist in (the one you live with!) to be able to fix it. I love the idea of one of these in the cold climes where you are. I could live in the cold but convincing a husband who hates the cold would be beyond possibility.

      1. How big is the place you live in Deb. We have around 35,000 in Busselton and surrounds, which I find is a perfect size. I lived in a small farming township once and that was hard work for sure, and we lived in Deloraine, Tassie, for a very short time. Deloraine has a population of around 5000, and that seemed ok. It was the regional hub for a few small towns, so had good facilities for a town of its size, including one of the main supermarkets.

        1. We have about 2000 people and are 100km from the big smoke in Wagga. We’re up in the hills so you can imagine the slurs we all get but it’s honestly the loveliest place to live and very community oriented. Just been to the turning of the sod on our rail trail which was a very happy occasion 😊

  9. One of the things I miss from our past home was our screened-in porch. It was set to get sun in late afternoon and had a ceiling fan, so it was a 3-season space for me. No worry about the bugs, great cushioned chairs to sink into. Yeah, miss it a lot. Your sunroom looks absolutely fabulous!!

    1. Thanks Pat, it really is a wonderful addition to our garden and my husband did such a great job with it. I call it my cubby house or SHE SHED, so versatile 🙂 . We have lots of screened in porches here too to keep out the bugs and I can hear how much you miss it from your words.

  10. My goodness – YES you are very lucky! That room is gorgeous, as is the beautiful space where you live! I’m so glad the storm didn’t completely wipe out the sunroom and that it was fixable!   12. I think you and your hubby sound like my hubby and me – I get the grand ideas and he helps me to carry them out! Your sunroom is just gorgeous! It looks like the perfect place to relax on a winter day. I didn’t realize you got snow in Australia! Thanks for teaching me this morning.

    1. Haha Laurie, I’m full of good ideas!! I love spending time in my sunroom and make all sorts of excuses to get out there. yes we live in the Snowy Mountains of Australia and actually get a lot of snow up on the mountains with ski resorts and all!! Happy to teach anytime 🙂

  17. You know how much I love your sunroom Deb – it’s the place you’re always in when I think about you – having a cuppa and reading a book. I’m so glad you got it fixed after the storm – it would have been a sad day indeed if the repair hadn’t been possible. I think it’s a bit too hot in WA for one of these but I certainly admire yours – especially with all the land around you for privacy.

Yes I can imagine WA is a bit too warm for one but here it’s just perfect I’m happy to say! Lovely to have you over – anytime 🙂

  18. The little sun lounge ( conservatory is too big a word for it ) is the best thing we have done to the back of the house. It gets the morning sun so on a nice day you feel like sitting there all morning.

    1. Hola, all good 🙂 haha Louise!! Well spotted, the pool was for me during a really hot summer and I called it the pool room 🙂 . I was sooo worried when the storm hit, as it seemed like a mini tornado and Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz sprang to mind as I pictured my beloved sunroom spiralling up and away. I do tend to be a bit over dramatic as the Mathematician always tells me! He is very useful to have around except he’s currently walking the Kokoda track at the moment so I’m enjoying some quiet alone time.

      1. I am glad it didn’t take off too. I wondered about the Kokoda, I saw the photo on Facebook and was trying to see if he was in the group. It’s great that he loves it and has the opportunity to still do it and of course he would be great asset for the group because he is a such pro on the trail. How many times do you think he has done it now?
        I don’t know that I could cope with the heat, leeches and bugs. Oh and the tents- forget that – I’ll take a hard bed INSIDE any day.

        Enjoy the quiet time, hope you are getting some beautiful Autumn weather too.

        1. Yes the weather is lovely at the moment. I have lots of family visiting me for Easter so Im looking forward to that. Grant has done it 8 times now and is at the back left of the photo with his head turned away talking to someone o his left. I don’t envy him either!!

    1. Thanks Donna, you know you are always welcome to come and sit with me and watch the world go by!! I was so worried about the damage at the time but thankfully it’s all been fixed now, the Mathematician is very skilful!!

    1. Thanks Jo, it really is awesome and so many others in town have wondered why they haven’t done something similar in their own backyards. We may start a new trend!! We have the perfect climate here which is why I was attracted to the idea when I saw it in Denmark and England. Just had to share the pics 🙂

  23. Oh, I have serious sunroom envy! It looks so inviting. While on family visits to the Midwest and east coast of the US, I also fell in love with screened-in porches. I wanted one so bad… then my husband reminded me that we don’t have bugs where we live, so we really didn’t need to screen in our porch or deck. So much for that!
