Winners and Losers #6 – What made us laugh or cry this week?

Friday Feature on Deb’s World

Winners & Losers #6

I’m having fun with my latest weekly roundup, sharing some of the cringe worthy or laugh out loud ‘stuff’ I’ve taken note of during the week. You are most welcome to join me in this quest each week by leaving me a comment with your own winners and losers!

Stonehinge 🙂

A winning meme – especially given our love of our New Zealand neighbours and their accent 🙂

Kokoda Trekking

My husband left for Papua New Guinea late last week to trek the Kokoda Track. This is his 8th time doing it! Every second year they take school students to walk in the footsteps of our soldiers, as part of our Rotary Club’s youth program. This is a winner in all ways! So many positives 🙂

The only down side is I’m home alone for two weeks 😦

Wasting time?

Baby Fit

During the week my daughter sent me this funny video – funny because our granddaughter has been doing these exact moves for weeks now and we laugh at her flexibility and ability to move into some weird positions that we can only dream about. I laughed out loud in places – tell me I’m not alone 🙂

Sad news for lovers of Hot Cross Buns who are trying to go low sugar/low carb – aka me 😦

In case you don’t get it, that one delicious bun has 10 teaspoons of sugar in it 😦

Derry Girls (2)

You might remember I mentioned the hit Netflix series, Derry Girls, in a recent Winners and Losers Friday post – well here’s some more….

The sad news is I’ve finished watching the first season on Netflix after it was recommended by my sister. I loved it and have spread the word to other friends and family – I am now needing new episodes!! Apparently they are showing in UK but not here in Australia just yet.

The good news is I have also found some Derry Girls playlists on Spotify. You can download playlists from Erin, Michelle, Orla, Clare, James and even Sister Michael – they are such fun and so uniquely ‘right’ for each of the characters 🙂 There’s also the complete season one playlist available as well! I’ve just found out that a third series has been confirmed 🙂 You’re welcome!

Sad news from Paris

Notre Dame
Notre Dame

Like many others, I have visited Paris and stood in awe looking at Notre Dame, so when I saw it burning, I felt saddened. This photo was all over social media and shows the devastation, but hopefully it will be able to be rebuilt and restored to its former glory.

Politicians the world over – enough said 🙂

Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it.

Rail Trail turning of the sod

  1. Nearly time for your man to be home. How amazing is he though. Good on teachers I say, even when retired. I hope your time hasn’t been too hard alone..oh that’s right, full house at Easter if I recall.

Thanks for linking up for #lifethisweek. Next week’s optional prompt: is “1/3 of 2019 is over” and for me, that IS scary. Hope to see you there. Denyse

    1. Yes it’s almost time for him to get back!! He’s always been a committed teacher and retiring hasn’t changed that one bit. I did have some family home at Easter but the other times have been very quiet here. I’ve managed to blog, read, listen to podcasts and amuse myself walking and riding, and the weather has been just glorious! I can’t believe we’re nearly at the 1/3 mark for the year, what’s the rush??

  2. I really enjoyed Derry Girls – watched it in one day! I’m not a fan of regular hot cross buns but I do like the chocolate ones. I can only imagine the amount of sugar in them!! Must confess, I’ve never been to Paris and while it was sad about what happened to the Notre Dame, the cynic in me gets annoyed that people don’t get concerned about other places that are burnt/destroyed enough to put money towards rebuilding them

  3. Derry Girls had me in stitches! I am very excited about the playlists – will check them out. Have you seen Sex Education? It’s also hilarious! That was sad news about the hot cross buns – lucky that Easter comes but once a year. And yes, also sad about Notre Dame but I felt even sadder that so much money was raised so quickly to renovate a cathedral because if all those people have so much spare cash, why can’t they spend it finding a cure for a terrible disease or helping those who are poor and needy?! Sigh! The baby gym made me laugh out loud – so funny!

    1. Thanks so much Sammie, I’m glad you found some interesting bits! I have heard about Sex Education and it’s now on my list. Yes it is lucky that Easter is but once a year and I know I enjoyed a bit of indulging 🙂 . I feel exactly the same about the amount of money raised so quickly for the rebuilding of Notre dame – sigh indeed! Yes I actually did baby gym with my 7 month old granddaughter over Easter and she is a real fitness guru, pushing me along with all her rolling and planks, and toes in the mouth….fun and games!!

  4. Hi Deb, lots of love and good things in this post, thanks for sharing your ups and downs. Maybe next year Bakers Delight can come up with a low sugar hot cross bun, though somehow I’m not sure it’d be so popular! Hope you had a fabulous Easter. I’m just returning from a couple of lovely days with my daughter and the family up in beautiful Myrtleford. Have a great week ahead. xx

    1. Hi Miriam, I was in Bright last week collecting my mother who had been visiting friends there. It’s such a gorgeous area at the moment with all the colour in the trees but very busy over the school holidays! Thanks for your comment on my post, I’m . enjoying sharing bits and pieces with everyone 🙂 . Hope Easter was a lovely time for you and your family 🙂 xx

  5. ‘Stonehinge’ had me smiling, but the hot cross buns story soon had me frowning. I always have mine toasted. I wonder if that helps get rid of any of those teaspoons of sugar, Debbie?

Winners for me this week – all those bloggers trying out the Gutenberg editor. Including you, Debbie, Your post looks fantastic.

    Happy Easter 🐰

    1. Thanks for the comment Hugh, I’m finding there are a few issues with the new editor but I’m managing OK so far.
I appreciate your helpful posts and comments.

I’m sure toasting hot cross buns helps dilute the sugar issue, wish I’d thought of that! I must admit I did eat a few halves over the weekend, it would be cruel not to!

  6. I’m a bit sad about the Hot Cross Buns! But I’d love a bit of baby fitness!

My winner and loser is kinda the same…
Yay for a lovely weekend away with my family…
But boo too as my hubby injured his foot there and is now in plaster for 3 months!

    1. The baby fitness was fun wasn’t it? I tried doing it with my granddaughter over easter and she is much more flexible and agile than I am!!! Oh, your poor hubby (and you) injuring his achilles tendon like that. Hoping all mends well.

  7. Another great post Deb – except the bit about hot cross buns and TEN teaspoons of sugar!! I’m going to pretend I didn’t see it because I do love me a hot cross bun! Very sad about Notre Dame Cathedral too – still, a lot of beautiful historical buildings have been destroyed in war and then rebuilt, so hopefully she’ll rise up again and be even more beautiful. Until next week my friend….

    1. Thanks Leanne, I took your advice and ignore the bit about the sugar in hot cross buns – I had to taste test a few just to make sure they were OK to offer my guests 🙂 . I did some baby gym with 7 month old Emilia and she is far fitter than I am, let me tell you!!

  8. Hi Deb,
Do you want a design tip for this post? You wouldn’t know but I do have a bit of an art and by way of that, a design background, pre kids.
I made hot cross buns for the first time ever. Well I made them in 1986 but they turned out to be rocks. They turned out ok but not enough spice. They look good though and are at least soft. Not enough spice though. Louise

      1. Ha ha.Guess what? You’ve already changed it. You’ve shifted the two top images so they’re side by side. I couldn’t look at them like they were – so much white space down the right side. That’s chalk on the black board for me. One more if you can. You might not be able to. The Deb icons are very in your face. If you could make the Easter icon and the text that goes with so they sit alongside each other in two columns? That area would look more balanced then. Not sure if it is possible. Otherwise I would decrease the size of the winning cup and the bold text. Centre align the cute baby video ( the baby is very cute – I watched some of it) If you do that it will be all balanced.

I have just returned from the shop. In my search for a bottle of rose I found Lock & Key Rose from Moppity Vine Yards, TUMBARUMBA!!! ( I’m not yelling, just emphasizing) Tomorrow I shall raise my glass to you and your Rail Trail. Happy Easter Deb.

        1. Thanks Louise for all that. I’ll look into it! I think some of the formatting depends on what device it’s viewed on. I’m trying to get used to using the new Gutenberg editor too so am playing around with things. 😊
          Enjoy your Tumbarumba drop.

  9. You’ve hit on a winner with this series, Deb and I look forward to reading what you come up with each week. I keep forgetting about Derry Girls but I know I will like it. We just watch Mrs Wilson on ABC Iview love it and I think you would too. Enjoy your Easter long weekend and pamper yourself while Grant is away xx

    1. Thanks so much Sue, I look forward to seeing what I come up with each week too 🙂 . I heard good things about Mrs Wilson so will add that to my list, thanks. All my visitors have now left so I’ve got one week to go until Grant returns! Thanks for your caring nature 🙂

  10. Lots to love this week. I’ve just started watching Derry Girls & am loving it – so will be having a listen to the playlist. Watching Notre Dame burn was so sad…but yep sad too is the news of that much sugar in Hot Cross Buns. I don’t eat Easter eggs but boy do I love a hot cross bun, with real butter slathered on. Enjoy your Easter break & great news about the turning of the sod.

    1. I must admit I enjoyed a few ‘halves’ of hot cross buns with real butter slathered on them too Jo!!! It just wouldn’t be right not to! Yes all is going well for the rail trail to continue being constructed and glad to hear you’re enjoying Derry Girls 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
