Happy to share this week’s Winners and Losers! What made us lose it by snorting out loud, cringing, laughing and crying – sometimes all at the same time?

Friday Feature on Deb’s World

Winners & Losers #8

Welcome to my weekly roundup, where I share some of the good, the bad and the ugly ‘stuff’ I’ve taken note of during the week. You are most welcome to join me in this quest each week by leaving me a comment with your own winners and losers!

A fascinating podcast about digital addiction 🙂

I listened to a scarily true podcast the other day, then made my husband listen to it on a road trip, it was riveting! It’s all about digital addiction in the current generation and the science behind it – might sound boring but trust me, it’s fascinating and also has some ideas on how to help.

The blurb says this:

Sex, drugs and rock and roll. That’s what we used to worry about when it came to the things that would mess up kids. These days the rate of things like teen pregnancy, smoking, drinking and drugs have fallen off a cliff. But they’ve been replaced with phones, screens, social media and video games, all of which are potentially addictive. David Gillespie knows exactly how we get addicted to these devices and why the addiction looks different in men and women. He joins Mia to talk about what’s happening to our teens and what we can do about it…

A creative quiz to take – which type are you?

Everyone has a Creative Type. What’s yours?

I’m a Visionary it seems!

The Creative Types test is an exploration of the many faces of the creative personality. Based in psychology research, the test assesses your basic habits and tendencies—how you think, how you act, how you see the world—to help you better understand who you are as a creative. Answer these 15 questions and you’ll gain a deeper understanding of your motivations, plus insight into how to maximize your natural gifts and face your challenges.

These personality types aren’t black-and-white labels. Think of them more as signposts pointing you toward your full creative potential. While there’s probably one core type that best describes you, you may change types at different points in your life and career, or even at different stages of the creative process. As a creative, you have a little bit of all eight Types inside you.

Brexit Yoga

Last week we had School Holiday Yoga and this week, my friend Donna from Retirement Reflections, sent me this Sammy J video to share about Brexit! The funny thing is Sammy J is Australian, Donna is in Canada and her son sent it to her from the UK – an around the world ticket!!

A joke from my sister 🙂

We have to laugh otherwise we’d all be crying with this election nonsense going on!

Musk sticks 🙂

I first saw this article a few weeks ago and am only now sharing it. I joined many others who were aghast that our delicious musk stick lollies (sweets) could be called ‘disgusting’ and feature in a Museum of Disgusting Food!

Love it or hate it, the musk stick is one of Australia’s most misunderstood treats

In October last year, Australian cuisine received a dubious international honour with the opening of Sweden’s Disgusting Food Museum.

Australia’s contribution to the museum collection includes Vegemite (of course) and witchetty grubs, but perhaps most surprising is the presence of the humble musk stick. They’re simple, unassuming lollies, not creepy, or crawly, or fermented.

Yet musk sticks manage to disgust tourists as much as they delight Australians. Read the full article here

Read This! Or don’t. Either way I still love you – by Angela Noel Lawson

I read this post by my blogging friend Angela and actually thought she’d read my mind. I often have these thoughts when writing and sharing my words. Angela says it far better than I ever could and I encourage you to click on the link below to read her post. Here’s a snippet:

Something’s been on my mind and I think it’s about time I share it with you. Being a friend or family member of a writer can be tough. We writers are always publishing, posting, promoting . . .  And though we try not to overwhelm you, I don’t think we always succeed. So, I’m here to tell my people: It’s okay if you don’t read my writing. Really, it is.

Don’t get me wrong, I still want people to read what I write; people, not necessarily you, exactly. I write for the same reason a sculptor sculpts; I see a vision and I want to make it manifest. Words are my art.

Read This! Or not. Either way I will still love you.

  1. The yoga bexit video is hilarious. I also read AngelaLawson’s post – what beauty that was. Perfectly said. I’m now following along her blog, and may even repost that one on my site, can’t see any point in re-inventing the wheel.

    1. Thanks Chris, that’s just what I want to do in this Friday feature – inspire others to read other things, enjoy snippets from around the world and laugh a little! I really enjoyed Angela’s post and shared it for the same reason you mention – why reinvent the wheel when she said it all so well!! Have a great Sunday 🙂

        1. I’m still unable to comment on Angela’s post. I’ve re-posted a link to her post on my own site, as I think she summed up perfectly my thoughts when I write. I’m often a bit worried that people will think I’m intruding into their lives. Angela’s post mirrors my own thoughts so well.

  2. OMG wombats!! I can honestly say I have never seen a wombat before today and I feel as if my life has been missing something!
Thank you for sharing my essay with your excellent readers! I’m so glad it resonated with a few folks. (And I’m glad to get it off my chest as well!)
I’m curious about those Musk thingys. When I visit Australia some day I must try one. BTW I hope that day is soon.
I love this roundup by the way.

    1. Oh Angela, wombats are all over our property and can be a real nuisance as they dig holes under houses and are as tough as nails! But very cute too!!! I was only too happy to share your post and, it’s always a pleasure to read something you relate so much to. Glad to hear you enjoyed my round up! Hope you get down here one day soon too 🙂

    1. Yes it’s hard to laugh sometimes when it is so sad and true! the yoga is really a funny sketch but a bit too close to the truth at times. The wombats were adorable weren’t they? Musk sticks taste like sugary musk flavouring, they can be a bit chewy but a classic Australian sweet.

  3. Thanks for the creativity quiz link! I love quizzes. I got Thinker… which I believe is accurate. And I did look at the Brexit yoga…as a Thinker, I loved the play on words! Really enjoying this new Friday post fo yours!

  4. Wow Deb that is quite the collection from your week. A lot to think about. I do think the digital addiction is a frightening thing. Spending so much time on social media myself I can see it. Have you heard about Instagram trialing removing likes and it seems Canada may be the starting point. On a happier note I could watch that wombat video all day long. Australia has the best, well and in some cases, the scariest, animals. Not the wombats though. So sweet.

    1. Hi Sue, yes I heard about the trial just yesterday, I wonder how it will go? Digital addiction is a very real thing and I know it is very frightening. Yes that wombat video is so cute isn’t it? We do have some pretty amazing animals down here. Thanks for stopping by, always love your visits 🙂

  5. I truly believe that digital addiction is a very real thing. I even think I have a touch of it myself! I was talking to an acquaintance recently about her 13 year old son who is seemingly addicted to online gaming. Now that would really concern me if it were my son. Thank God it wasn’t around when I was young and also when my two children were teenagers. They were both too busy out doing sport and other interests to worry too much about technology.

    1. I know what you mean Kathy, we all seem to be reliant on our devices these days. I really feel for the coming generation who won’t know any different, whereas we at least have had time without being connected. Addiction to games is a real concern and the podcast talked about how they are marketed that way and made to be addictive. Thanks for your thoughts.

  6. HI Deb, you’ve done it again with a fab Friday post. I’m a Visionary apparently – who would have thought? Re the podcast, my daughter and SIL are very conscious of screen time and TV with Ethan. He is allowed 1/2 hour of TV a day and they ensure he plays outside in nature and uses his imagination as much as possible. I love musk sticks and haven’t had one for years they remind me of primary school where you could buy one for 1cent. The wombat is cuteness overload. Have a great week and I’m eager to see what you come up with next week. xx

    1. Oh that’s a lovely comment, thanks very much Sue. I think us Aussies really love musk sticks and we all have memories of them as we were growing up. Screen time is a real issue with many and the podcast really explained it well. Have a lovely weekend my friend xx

  7. I really enjoyed this post, Deb! I like that you flit between topics and keep it current. I took the “creatives” test and found I’m the “adventurer”. Seems fitting I think. And it makes me feel that I should be braver with my writing too-which could be interesting. I appreciate the piece about being okay with friends/relatives not reading what we write. I think it’s beneficial to not allow ourselves to get caught up in wondering if our loved ones are reading or liking what we write. For me, this week, politically speaking, AG Barr is the loser of the week. He must resign. Hopefully Trump will follow.

    1. Thanks so much Rhonda! You’ve described my mind so well with the word flitting!! I do that all the time so it’s good that my post reflects this side of me 😊 I’m glad the creative quiz showed you something about yourself, I thought it was quite well done and on the money too. Your political climate is so interesting to watch from afar, and I wish you good luck!! Enjoy the weekend ahead and thanks again for joining in.
