One fifth of a family
I’m one fifth of my family.
Yes that’s me in the fetching brown velour pantsuit on the left. This family portrait was taken in 1977 when I was sweet 16, nearly 17. I must admit to being very happy to have been born into this family 🙂
One fifth of my family
I’m one fifth of this family I helped to create and I’m very proud. Of all the many, many photos of my family, this is one of my all time favourites. It was taken at our daughter’s wedding in November 2015, and we all look so happy – yes maybe it was the wine talking but I still love it!
My fifth birthday party
When I found this photo from my fifth birthday party (see the five candles on the cake?), I fell in love with it. I wrote a Birthday Letter to myself last December and used this photo. Don’t I just look so cute and happy? 🙂
Memories of Fractions in Fifth Grade
I remember my father trying to teach me about fractions. He used to nearly pull his hair out as I wasn’t very clever and couldn’t grasp the concept. I have memories of him with cut up pieces of cereal boxes explaining over and over again how many parts make up a whole. I must have been in about fifth grade at the time.
If I’m being honest, this next photo doesn’t really have anything to do with either fractions or fifths but it made me think of that time with my father. I also needed a photo that I’ve actually taken, for this post, as it is supposed to be a photography challenge when all is said and done!
It’s a mandarin in segments and was part of a photo session I did with my sister a few months back. I happen to like it a lot! I’m just going to pretend that it fits in with the theme of fifths for this week. Maybe we can say it’s two-fifths of a mandarin. Thanks again to my sister for inspiring me and challenging me.
Note: It’s lucky I went on to marry The Mathematician isn’t it??
In my fifth decade
I have decided that my current decade, my fifth, is my favourite time so far. There have been lots of ups and downs but as I wrote in this post My Five Favourite Decades:
I am now:
- more confident in myself
- more happy with who I am
- more settled financially
- free of the stresses that go with working for a living
- a grandmother
- an award winning blogger!
The fifth month
I was very clever and had all my children within 5 weeks of each other with May being a special month for our family. Of course they weren’t all born in the same year!! I’m not that clever!
Our first daughter was born towards the end of May, our second daughter was born just shy of 2 years later in early May and our third daughter was born three years and a few weeks later in early June. Our middle daughter’s birthday is the very special May the 4th be with you day!

I’m aware this post has been more about memories than photos I’ve actually taken, but sometimes that’s where our thoughts take us when we sit down to write a blog post. Well mine do anyway!
This week the theme for Terri’s Sunday Stills is Fifth, and I’m very happy to share a few of my special thoughts on fifth, with you. It wasn’t an easy prompt but I’ve enjoyed myself nonetheless!

Loved that photo of the mandarin (or was it an orange). May must seem like Christmas in your household with all the birthdays together. How good must that be. We’re similar, my husband and I in May, our children in June.

Yes it’s a mandarin Chris and we did enjoy being all together. We are always very aware of getting together and making the effort to do so. Enjoy your upcoming birthdays 🙂

Amazing to be a fifth of two families, I guess I am too, and between my hubby and I, we have 5 adult children, with one grandchild who was born in May last year!! Good thought, I was one fifth, my parents were each one fifth. We had three children, but I am assured by them it’s quarters from now on!

So many happy memories here. Love seeing the family photos of different times in your life. You all look very happy indeed at the wedding. Like you this decade I have felt the most settled and content. New chapters, less stress and perhaps we are that much wiser.

Hi Debbie, I like how the number five was a common thread throughout your story. A beautiful photo of your family! I am sure you would all be smiling, wine or no wine. It was a happy occasion. Good post Debbie. I enjoyed reading it. I’m not sure about the fifth and a mandarin though ;). I am trying to think of another explanation for you. I think you must have eaten the other eight segments making it a fifth. Forget the skin. It’s a good shot though with the black shiny surface. The Fifth birthday photo is a classic. I love the picture of you on your fifth birthday… but it looks like your sister is trying to blow out your candles 🙂 I had trouble with fractions too, but then my teacher explained something in such a way that suddenly made everything clear to me. It was like a light was turned on and I finally got it. It’s still Star Wars Day here, so May the Fourth be with you too!
