Welcome to Week 10 of my weekly Friday roundup, where I share some of the good, the bad and the ugly ‘stuff’ I’ve taken note of during the week. Last year’s Odyssey 🙂 + 😦

I have been reminded a lot lately, that this time last year the Mathematician and I were away on our 3 month Odyssey, touring places in England, Iceland, Denmark, France, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland – and spending time with beautiful, generous people. Somehow amongst all the excitement of seeing our daughter and visiting new places I still managed to keep up with my blog while we were travelling. These reminders make me happy because we did it but also sad because it’s all over now! Does that make sense??

I just had to share this happy shot from our visit to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. It was pretty cold outside but the water temperature was sooo warm. We took our eldest daughter with us on our trip to Iceland – lucky her and lucky us to get to spend a week in her fabulous company!

A Movie recommendation: Top End Wedding – just fabulous!!! 🙂

The blurb: Lauren and Ned are engaged, they are in love, and they have just ten days to find Lauren’s mother who has gone AWOL somewhere in the remote far north of Australia, reunite her parents and pull off their dream wedding.

The Mathematician and I took his mother to see this movie for Mother’s Day and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I can say we all laughed, cried and cringed throughout it – the scenery, the story, the acting – it was all absolutely fabulous! If you get a chance to see it, I highly recommend it!!

When your posts get stolen 😦

I read a post from Hugh, a blogging buddy in the UK, where he wrote about how to help stop someone from stealing your blog posts. It seems to be a thing where someone copies and pastes your words and images from a post and puts it onto their own site. As far as I know I have never been a target for this type of thing but it’s sad to know that it happens. Hugh’s post offers tips on how to protect your words and images, and what to do if your work has been stolen in this way. It’s well worth a read to stay on top of this awful behaviour.

How to help stop someone from stealing your blog posts

As Hugh says in his post:

I recently stumbled upon a blog where the author had copied and was using my blog posts. No pingbacks or mention that I was the original author, just plain copy and pasting of some of my posts and images. It left me feeling angry, yet I also felt honoured that my work must be good enough if somebody wanted to copy it.

Politics free zone! 🙂

You might have noticed that this week’s edition is again a politics free zone, although many memes have been tempting to share! I know I will be glad to have this federal election over and done with soon, and then we’ll just have to move on with whoever the people have voted in. Let’s hope it’s a sensible choice!

Mother’s Day 🙂 – do you have a favourite child?

A great post I found this week on a Blogging Grandmothers group, was all about your favourite child. I sent it to my daughters knowing they’d enjoy it 🙂 You might like it too!

We’ve done a bit of driving lately and always enjoy listening to podcasts to while away the hours. Andrew Denton is an inspiring interviewer and has a TV show which is then made into a podcast. One of our favourites this week was about Rebecca Sharrock, a 28yr old woman from Brisbane, who can remember every day of her life, due to having a condition called HSAM (Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory). There are only a handful of people in the world who have this condition and it was fascinating hearing her talk with Andrew about her life. Her mother was just as inspiring as she held her family together with love and support, as everyone in her family, including her husband has some form of intellectual challenge. It was so interesting and highly recommended.

Dupuytren’s contracture 😦

Dupuytren’s (du-pwe-TRANZ) contracture is a hand deformity that usually develops over years. The condition affects a layer of tissue that lies under the skin of your palm. Knots of tissue form under the skin — eventually creating a thick cord that can pull one or more fingers into a bent position. The affected fingers can’t be straightened completely, which can complicate everyday activities such as placing your hands in your pockets, putting on gloves or shaking hands. Dupuytren’s contracture mainly affects the two fingers farthest from the thumb, and occurs most often in older men of Northern European descent. A number of treatments are available to slow the progression of Dupuytren’s contracture and relieve symptoms.

    Love this series of yours!
    Also, my dad also had Dupuytren’s contracture but never had surgery for it, he just kind of lived with it. But I think he was older than your husband when it really became pronounced.

  7. I really enjoy your Winners and Losers posts each week Deb. But there is so much to love about this one. I will checkout Hugh’s link about posts being stolen. I’ve had it happen to me on my genealogy blog. It’s quite a common thing on genealogy blogs. It was eventually taken down bit it did cause me much stress #MLSTL Sharing on SM

    1. Oh that’s terrible you’ve had posts stolen Jennifer! It was really interesting reading Hugh’s post as I didn’t know it was so common. I’ve added a copyright message on each of my posts as a result of reading it, but not sure how much that would stop someone! I’ m so happy to hear you enjoy the Friday posts, I really have fun collecting bits during the week and have to stop myself from overstuffing the post!! Thanks so much for sharing too!

  8. Hope your hubby’s operation goes well 🙂 Loved reading your news and musings. I also really want to see the movie Top End. I’m in England at the moment and the second series of Victoria is all the rage (I’m loving it!).

  10. SIX posts in one week Deb!! I can’t keep up with you! I’m hard pressed to do two + #MLSTL. Really enjoyed all your links and thoughts today – and I hope your hub’s surgery goes well – that’s the worst case I’ve seen (the surgeon I used to work for operated on a few but none that bad) it must be driving him crazy.
    I’m off to read the favourite child post now – enjoy your weekend xx

  11. I always enjoy reading your Winners and Losers! Both my husband and I have some thickening of our palms in places (his is hereditary, I’m not aware of any other family members who have it). Fortunately, we both pass the palms flat on the table test so fingers crossed (as long as we can cross them, that is 🙂 ) that we won’t have any problems. I hope your husband’s surgery went well. I saw a show on 60 Minutes about several people with HSAM. It was fascinating. I’ll check out that podcast!

  13. Thanks so much for mentioning my post about copyright infringement, Debbie. I’m pleased to report that the latest case of it happening to me has been resolved. The blogger who copied and claimed one of my recent posts as their work, took the post down within 24 hours of me contacting them. So, I did not have to issue a DMCA notice via WordPress.

    As for shortening names, I do sometimes get referred to as Hug! Sometimes, people (by mistake, I hope) call me Huge, rather than Hugh, but that could be down to automatic spell check. Who knows?

    Winner for me this week – Kate Miller-Heidke, who is singing Australia’s entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. She has a great voice (and I think the song has a good chance of winning), but how on earth does she stay on that pole while singing?

    Loser – the person who stole my ‘Hot Dates’ blog post and claimed the piece of flash fiction as their own. Grr!

      Kate M-H did a great job for Australia in Eurovision. We watched the voting this morning and it’s always such a fun event!

  17. HSAM – gosh, never heard of it, how would your mind have room? But I have always wondered why some people remember their young lives better than others. A while back my daughter said ‘I don’t remember much about my childhood.’ WHAT! – thanks a lot, all those special things parents do and she doesn’t remember them? I thought my sharp memories of childhood ( assuming they are accurate ) were aided by my childhood and teens being neatly divided into three very different places and my husband’s lack of memories due to living in the same town for 22 years and having a strange childhood.
    ps. Top End Wedding looks really good, I hope we get it over here.

  19. I’ve been in Sydney for work this week so have barely had time to scratch myself, but my big win for the week was finding season 3 of Shetland on Netflix – and the flight home last night.
