Winners & Losers #12

Welcome to Week 12 of my Friday roundup, where I share some of the good, the bad and the ugly ‘stuff’ I’ve taken note of during the week. I’m really enjoying this collection of bits and pieces and love getting your responses – thanks so much to everyone who reads, comments and shares. You are very welcome to join me in this quest each week by leaving me a comment with your own winners and losers. You can also leave me a link to your favourite post from the week and I’ll be happy to share.

Musings on a Monday quote 🙂

Don't judge me
Don’t judge me

I loved finding this quote written on a blackboard at a cafe last week. And I needed the laugh it gave me at the time 🙂

Did you know I share a new quote each Monday on Instagram? Are you following me on Insta yet – click here to join in the fun!

Only in Australia???

Only in Australia would you get the nicknames of ScoMo and Albo for the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader – yes seriously!!

Traffic jam on Mt Everest 😦

This image has been doing the rounds on media lately – it’s a traffic jam of people climbing Mt Everest on May 22 by climber Nirmal Purja @nimsdai . I have no words!

Breakfast fit for a queen 🙂

On a cold wintery morning in Canberra recently, we went to Pollen Cafe at the Australian National Botanic Gardens for breakfast/lunch/brunch. It was my first visit and I was very impressed with the location, service and food. We also visited the information centre and gift shop. Unfortunately due to the inclement weather we weren’t able to walk around the gardens too much – there will be a next time, I can assure you as it all looked very inviting.

I can confirm that this breakfast was as delicious as it looked – house made waffle, lemon curd, mascarpone, meringue, raspberry coulis, sweet almond dukkah. Probably not the healthiest option on the menu but definitely the best looking!!! Yummo 🙂

More Food

This post about Food Waste, from Sue and Dave in Canada, was well worth a read and a share! They volunteer at Food Rescue and offer some tips on how we can all reduce our food waste. You can read it here:

In the eyes of an 8 month old baby 🙂

This story was sent to me by my daughter and is written from the perspective of an 8 month old baby. It was posted by the father of an 8 month old, in the New York Times. I really enjoyed it. Here’s a short snippet to whet your appetite.

I wake up at 4 a.m. — 3:30, ideally. In that quiet time, I catch up on my mobile and work in a little yoga with Baby’s Pose, where you basically try to eat your own feet. Then I’m ready to scream for my first breast of milk. While the rest of the world is asleep, I’ve already won the morning.

In my crib at night, I reflect on the day and list three things I’ve learned. Maybe it’s how to operate a toy dump truck, maybe it’s the ability to clap, maybe it’s recognizing who my father is among the other larger adults. It doesn’t matter how big or small; the crucial thing is that you’ve overcome challenges, evolved, and are ready to do it all over again in six hours. Namaste.

My granddaughter just happens to be 8 months old and a real delight! She’s just worked out how to clap on demand (I can show you a video if you’d like) and has 5 teeth now. She is adorable 🥰 So you can see why this article resonated with me!

For the love of books 🙂 📚

This meme appealed to me – and in my opinion it’s pretty spot on!

I’ve read a few good books lately. I enjoyed the The Nowhere Child by Christian White and have just read two of Ann Cleeve’s Vera Stanhope books, The Crow Trap and Telling Tales. What are you reading at the moment?

More wombats – there seems to be a theme here!

Did you know this is the noise they make? I also didn’t know there was such a thing as Wombat Wednesday!! You learn something new everyday 🙂

Update on the hand!

My husband, the Mathematician, had surgery about two weeks ago on his Viking Finger or more correctly Dupuytren’s Contracture. Here are the before and after photos! All is going well with his recovery. He now has an impressive Harry Potter scar!

Changing Seasons 🍁 🌨

Well it seems our glorious run of autumn weather has come to an end with snow, hail rain, wind, freezing temperatures and that was just one day!

Bad weather ahead?
Bad weather ahead? Do you think???

To continue with my autumn spam I offer these last few photos taken just before the cold snap hit. Enjoy your summer months if you are on the other side of the world to us!

This week’s posts:

Did you notice that I’ve changed my blog theme? Let me know what you think 🙂 The reason I changed was my previous theme wasn’t working too well with the new Gutenberg editor so when I read Hugh’s suggestions for (free) themes that work best with the new editor, I thought I’d have a play around and well, one thing led to another. It’s always quite traumatising changing your theme but this time it wasn’t too bad, once I made the decision and went for it! Do you change your themes regularly or stay using the same one?

If you’ve missed any of the earlier posts in my Friday Feature – you can find them here: Winners and Losers

What made your winners/losers list this week? Let me know if you have any suggestions for me on books, Netflix, movies, podcasts – anything!

Any thoughts on these winners or losers?

Keep smiling and thanks for reading.

Deb 🙂

  1. That Everest picture hurts. Greed kills people. 1996 taught them nothing. And I never heard of Dupuytren’s Contracture before your husband, so that picture was interesting to look at. As always, though, I’m fascinated by your autumn pictures.

  2. Those Mt Everest pics have been astounding – for all the wrong reasons. I love your new theme – and the colourway. It’s bright, positive and true to your voice. What one did you end up going with? I do love a new theme & try & change mine annually-ish.

    1. Thanks so much for the feedback on the new theme Jo, I’ve used a WordPress free theme called 2017 and just fiddled to make it more me!! I try to change at least once every year or two, it an be quite traumatic but this time I didn’t find it too hard, except for deciding what I wanted it to look like! Enjoy the weekend at home 🙂

  3. As usual Debbie, a really interesting read. I must admit I have only read a couple of you “Winners and Losers” posts. But each time I thoroughly enjoy the eclectic snippets you discuss. My favourite this time … the story about the 8 month baby. The not so favourite is the traffic jam on Mt Everest. I simply don’t get it! And congrats on changing your theme. I will read the link 👍

    1. Thanks Estelle, I know it can be hard keeping up sometimes but I really appreciate you stopping by when you can! I loved the 8 month old baby story too, so cute!! The Mt Everest shots have become quite the talking point – as they should be!
I’m really happy with my new theme in all its orange-ness 🙂

  4. Phew… I guess now I can delete “climb Mt Everest” from my bucket list 🙂. To spend all that money, time, and preparation just to stand in line sounds crazy when I could just drive up to Anaheim and visit Disneyland. They even have several mountains to choose from (the Matterhorn, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, etc.). Same long lines but not quite as expensive. 😎

    1. Yes I think it’s become one of those parts of the world we all have to consider, do we really want to go there? Great idea to visit Anaheim – oh that brings back memories of returning to Aus after a year long teacher exchange in England and having to bribe our 3 young children to leave the UK by promising a stop over at Disneyland on the way home. We spent 3 days there over Christmas and had an absolute ball!! This was back in 1992 so it will have changed a lot, maybe I can take the grandchildren one day?? Thanks so much for joining in.

  5. So glad to hear your husband’s recovery is going well. Yikes to that before photo! As to the Everest situation I am heartsick. Dave and I climbed for 15 years outdoors, not mountaineering mind you, but it had once been a dream of mine to go to Everest base camp. I am afraid that like so many other places in this world over tourism has made it to the great mountain. Sadly this is more than inconvenience but loss of life. Unbelievable.

    1. Yes it’s been a global response hasn’t it? It’s never been on my list but we thoroughly enjoyed our trek around the Annapurna Sanctuary years ago and I’d go back there in a heart beat! I hope you didn’t mind me linking to your food post, it was too good not to share 🙂 Thanks for your visit!

  6. What a varied read, Debbie. There’s so much in this post, and I enjoy the way you divide it all up into little digestible snippets. Wombat Wednesday? No, never heard of it. I’ve come across a few strange challenges, usually on Twitter. “Thirsty Thursday” was one such one. 🍷
Thanks again for another mention. I’m glad you’re enjoying your new blog theme. I think it looks great.

  7. Saw “Top End Wedding” this week and it is such a great movie. Funny, touching and wonderful photography. Miranda Tapsell is so talented … she acted in, co-wrote and produced the film.

    1. I loved that movie too Lily and agree Miranda Tapsell is very talented! I could definitely watch it again as it is such a great story with amazing scenery. Thanks for joining in with your recommendation 😊

  8. Hi Deb,
Well wombats screaming is a new one on me. The mathematicians hand looks a big improvement. Everst summit is next level although I’ve seen similar photos but maybe not at that height. They are talking about putting restrictions on it and the sooner the better. The blog looks good. What theme did you change to? Louise

    1. Thanks Louise, I thought of you when I saw the Everest shots and wondered how you were feeling about it all. I agree with the need for restrictions. I used the theme 2017 – free and quite easy to do! Enjoy the weekend ahead 🙂

  9. Hi Deb I just love the autumn colours so thanks for sharing although I suppose it is getting very chilly where you live. I’m loving your Monday quotes and look forward to them each week. I am always amazed at how flexible babies are and wish I was that flexible. Elliot just sits there and lifts one leg with no problem. He turned 1 this week so celebrations in my world. I can’t imagine life without him and Ethan and I suppose that is the way you feel about Emilia. Enjoy your trip north xx

    1. That’s lovely to hear Sue, your feedback is always so welcome. I’m amazed at how much babies grow and learn in their first year, I’d forgotten so much! I can’t believe Eliot turned 1 already and I can just imagine the celebrations you had 🙂 . I do feel that way about Emilia too, whatever did we do without her in our lives? See you soon xx

  10. Those Mt Everest pics just did my head in – the amount of money and the amount of support and technology required to be one of those people who are prepared to die just so they can say they climbed Everest. I get the early climbers but now it’s just ridiculous – I just don’t get it at all – too much money and too little of it spent on what really matters (IMHO) Also glad your hubby’s hand is going so well. And for books – I just finished Nine Perfect Strangers by Lianne Moriarty – not too bad – but not fantastic either.
    Have a lovely weekend xx

    1. I totally agree with you Leanne, it’s just so wrong on so many levels!! The hand is going well and he’s using it lots more now without any problem. I read Nine Perfect Strangers and was looking forward to it, but was mildly disappointed I must say. I usually love all her books too. Enjoy your weekend xx

  11. Hi Deb, Good to hear that Grant’s hand is healing. I too was shocked regarding the traffic jam on Mt Everest, funnily enough, I have just finished writing up a post that includes my thoughts on that 🙂 Cafe looks excellent, one of my life’s pleasures is finding good food, and of course, beautiful garden walks which is another activity I enjoy. Your weekly post is a fun format for discussion about issues and the like.

  12. Hi Deb, Great initial quote! A favourite mantra of mine is perfection is the enemy of good. The Mt. Everest situation is tragic on many levels. I loved “in the eyes of an 8 month old baby.” Sharing milestones, my daughter sent me a video yesterday of my 13 month old grandson taking his first steps. I can show you the video😉❤️

  13. It’s certainly turned cold quickly here on the east coast hasn’t it Deb. But lots of things to brighten up my morning in your post. I loved the musings from an eight year old, so very cute and the meme about books is so true. Glad to hear Grant’s finger is recovering, Harry Potter scar indeed! Have a great weekend Deb. Oh, and by the way, your new theme looks great. xx 😊

    1. Much too early Miriam!! Always great to have your comments 🙂 We’re heading north for a few weeks so will escape some of the cold temps for a while at least. I really enjoyed the musing from the baby too, it was cute and I could so relate to it from my granddaughter’s viewpoint. I’m enjoying my new theme and am happy to have your views on it. Enjoy the weekend ahead and stay warm xx
