Winners and losers #16 – what made the list this week?

Friday Feature on Deb’s World

Winners & Losers #16

Welcome to Week 16 of my Friday roundup. It’s been great fun sharing these collections with you all, and I love getting your responses – thanks so much to everyone who reads, comments and shares. I try to mix it up each week so hopefully there’s something for everyone.

You are very welcome to join in each week by leaving a comment with your own winners and losers. If you’re a blogger, you can also leave me a link to your favourite post from the week and I’ll be happy to share.

The best Aussie Midlife Bloggers

The big news this week is that Deb’s World was listed in Leanne’s Cresting the Hill post, which featured her favourite Aussie midlife bloggers – I’m thrilled to be included with other great midlife bloggers.

I love the Aussie camaraderie and the encouragement and support I receive from each of these lovely women. Blogging has proved to be such a surprising journey into finding joy in Midlife – and it wouldn’t be the same without them! I could also mention my other Midlife blogging friends from all over the world – but that would take weeks!

Leanne from Cresting the Hill

We all do different things but we are open to learning from each other, encouraging others and offering support without asking for it. It’s a great joy of blogging to have met so many talented and interesting women. You can read Leanne’s post here:

Musings on a Monday quote 🙂

This one may, or may not, be aimed at moi 🙂

I share a new quote each Monday on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Are you with me? The more the merrier, so feel free to follow along.

The Winter Solstice Downunder

While we were enjoying a swim in the warmth of Noosa in Queensland for the Winter Solstice, and feeling mighty brave doing so I might add, some hardy souls braved the water in Canberra’s freezing temperatures in the nude!!! You can read the full story here:

This is my photo of our Winter Solstice which was spent in beautiful Noosa, swimming in the sea (we were suitably attired I might add!) and walking along the beach. I used this photo and a few others in my recent post for Sunday Stills, with the prompt of stillness.

While we’re on the subject of winter

My daughters shared this photo with me and I just had to include it this week – it says it all! One daughter lives in Brisbane and the other in England, so it was very appropriate 🙂

Only in Australia v5!! 😮

First we had politicians called Scomo and Albo; then koalas in a cuddle-train; followed by kangaroos keeping warm; last week an amazing photo of a platypus and this week we have a wombat massage. Isn’t this just the cutest??

You may not know that our family currently has a ‘thing’ about wombats, as my eldest daughter is expecting her first baby and she has named it Wombat :). They aren’t finding out the sex of the baby beforehand and so it will be called Wombat until it is born. You may remember in the early days of my weekly Friday series I seemed to feature wombats a lot, well that’s why!! As she lives in England, and is still theoretically an Australian, it is quite fitting to call the baby Wombat, don’t you think?

Just for fun 🙂

Which one are you? I’m Sagittarius but don’t like the bin-bird animal, maybe I’m just misunderstood 🙂

Rocketman

My youngest daughter and I enjoyed a rare treat together on the weekend, we went to the movies together. And not just the movies, but Gold Class – my treat! We had a lovely snack brought to us, while reclining back in our spacious and comfortable chairs and both loved the movie. It might not be to everyone’s taste but as I grew up with Elton John’s music in my teenage years it was so good to bop along and see the story behind the star. I really liked the way the story was told and think Taron Egerton did a great job as Elton.

Of course we took a selfie to prove we were there 🙂

Congrats to Ash Barty – Tennis #1

Ash Barty is now the World No. 1 Women’s Tennis player and we are all so proud of her. I saw this tweet from Aussie player and coach, Darren Cahill, which lists the rise and rise of Ash Barty in recent years. As he said, it’s a stunning rise to the top in just 3 years. She is a hard working and talented player who shows how it can be done, without all the carry-on of some of our other players.

  • May 2016 – unranked
  • Dec 2016 – 272
  • Dec 2017 – 17
  • Dec 2018 – 15
  • June 24, 2019 – No.1

Tennis #2 – Meet Shirley our 85 year old tennis champion

This story warmed my heart this week so I hope you enjoy it too. Melbourne grandmother Shirley Whitaker is the new world tennis No.1 in the 85-and-over age group. You can read Shirley’s story here –

Move over Ash Barty. Meet Shirley our 85 year old world tennis champ

Tennis #3Nick Kyrgios interviewed by a young boy

This was a real delight to watch, especially the young boy’s first question to Nick, he didn’t hold back!!

Aussie Women’s Sport

This is a short comic sketch about the state of sport in Australia and unfortunately it is a bit too close to the truth to be laugh out loud funny. It is very well done in my opinion, and Sammy J always seems to have some great observations in his comedy sketches.

We’re on our way home 😦

We’re on our way home now after a lovely few weeks in Brisbane visiting our youngest daughter and son-in-law. The drive down has been in heavy rain at times, although in classic Aussie style, it’s not getting to where it’s actually needed unfortunately!

Here’s a photo from our road trip home – one of the roads we took was the Waterfall Way and we came across this beauty! This was the lower of the two falls.

Sometimes the road less travelled is well worth the detour.

  2. How lovely that you shared my post of fantastic Aussie Midlife bloggers Deb – everyone on the list is such a joy to read and I hope that more people discover the ones they haven’t encountered yet.
Naked winter swimming is not on my bucket list so I’ll leave that to the hardy souls who are a bit bat sh##t crazy IMHO.
Also loved your little sunglasses meme asking if we’re following you – a great adaptation of the original! x

  3. Hi Deb, your weekly posts and wrap ups always make me smile. As did that very cute interview by the young boy. I’m a crocodile by the way, though I’m not so sure about that description. I’d prefer to be a wombat too, they have way more fun! Have a fabulous weekend. xx
