Who, and what, made the Winners and Losers list for week #19?

Friday Feature on Deb’s World

Winners & Losers #19

Welcome to Week 19 of my Friday roundup. It’s always fun seeing which stories take my interest from one Friday to the next. Some of them, well actually most of them, make me smile, and the losers are in the minority. I’m not really into celebrating the negatives, I’m much more interested in the positives and anything that makes me smile is in that category. I’ve also learnt that life is much better when we’re kind to one another and when we smile.

So, here are my Winners and Losers for another week. I don’t know where the weeks are going but my goodness they are rushing by aren’t they?

#JournalinginJuly – Week 2

As mentioned previously, I’m participating in Journaling in July with Sue from Sizzling Towards 60 and Beyond. We are co-hosting a link up each Saturday for anyone who wants to participate in responding to Sue’s 31 daily journal writing prompts.

You can read my introductory post about the July challenge here , my Week 1 post here and my Week 2 post here. If you’re keen, you can join in – the more the merrier. My weekly posts and a summary of the week’s daily prompts, will be posted each Saturday.

Musings on a Monday quote 🙂

Instagram

Just a quick question – how is your Instagram feed going?

It’s interesting that an experiment of removing ‘likes’ has been announced as starting in Australia today. Have your heard the news? It’s really upset a lot of people! Are you terribly concerned?

This Guardian article has the whole story – Instagram hides number of likes in Australia Trial

Instagram users in Australia will no longer be able to see how many likes a post has a received under trial changes to “remove pressure” on the digital platform’s users.

Instagram will on Thursday begin rolling out the trial update removing the total number of likes on photos and viewings of videos on user feeds and profiles, and permalink pages.

Users will still be able to see a list of likes on their posts, just not the overall number.

Only in Australia v8!! – A love story with a difference!

This segment is proving to be so much fun each week!

First we had politicians called Scomo and Albo; then koalas in a cuddle-train; followed by kangaroos keeping warm; then an amazing photo of a platypus, followed by a wombat massage and we got to meet Pixie, an orphaned baby koala. Last week I shared a cute little creature, which was a new one for me – a yellow-footed antechinus, also known as a mardo. This week it’s an echidna train – of the LOVE variety.

An Echidna love train

Have you ever seen this behaviour? It’s breeding season for echidnas, meaning if you’re lucky you might spot these usually solitary critters in a “love train”.

During the mating season, male echidnas will line up behind a female and follow her around — she may have several males following her for up to 50 days! Eventually, the males will have a wrestling match and the winner will mate with the female. How’s that for a love story? 🤔

We’ve actually had a love train in our paddock – a wonderful sight!

Bluey

I have come to enjoy watching random episodes of the Australian children’s cartoon Bluey, soon to go international, and all these clever people are making cakes, paintings and now cross-stitch patterns of Bluey. The TV show also won a Gold Logie at the recent awards! Some people are just so creative aren’t they?

My daughter found this excellent Guardian article about Bluey and the positive parenting it is portraying – well worth a read!

There is evidence Bluey can teach you how to be a better parent

A reminder that it’s cold down under

I enjoyed reading this article from Richard Glover and it might be interesting reading for anyone who has the misguided belief that Australia is always HOT.

Richard Glover is a comedian, author, journalist and has a weekly radio show called TGIF

The article can be read here:

Frozen stiff in an apparently hot land

Snowy roads
Snowy roads in our area – not my photo

This photo (not mine) is of our area, over the weekend when we had a huge cold front move through. Don’t tell me Australia is always a hot country!

Foxes are so last season!

Last year when I was in England I was very taken with the signs saying ‘For Fox sake, slow down’ and I came to love saying, For fox sake, over and over again! Well this week my son-in-law sent me this photo with the message that foxes are so last season!

This made me laugh and cringe at the same time!

FaceApp

Another interesting thing doing the rounds at the moment is the FaceApp where you give permission for the app to access all your photos and it shows you how you will look when you are really old!

I haven’t done it and I won’t be doing it for various reasons – the main one being I just need to look at my mother to have some idea of how I will look in 20 years time 🙂

And I’m quite happy with that!

My posts this week:

If you’ve missed any of the earlier posts in my Friday Feature – you can find them all here: Winners and Losers

You are very welcome to join in each week by leaving a comment with your own winners and losers.

  1. Hi Deb,
Our granddaughter’s mom did the faceaging app…pretty funny. I shared the 4th Ape and the Bluey article on my Facebook, hoping some of the young parents see them…

  2. If you need another reason not to play with the facebook app – not that anyone should really need one – this was in today’s press here… https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-7256175/Experts-warn-people-careful-using-viral-Russian-aging-app-FaceApp.html
And Australia cold? Surely that’s like saying it rains a lot in England… just a malicious rumour spread around by those Kiwis aggrieved at losing last Sunday…

  3. Oh I love those signs!
And FaceApp… Hmmm… Why would I want to know how I look when I’m older?! It’s already scary, contemplating 50!!!

My winners this week… A dinner out with my colleagues, celebrating the end of the school year (nearly – we break up next Thursday)
My son being able to save up, himself, unprompted, for a new bike. The boy is growing up!

    Losers – I’m not sure!
    Just that I’m tired….

    1. Thanks Ritu, hopefully you’ll feel refreshed when you get to be on holidays! Love work celebrations, it’s something I miss now that I’m not working! Holidays are always a winner 🙂 Your son is growing up and good on him for saving his pounds for a bike he can say he bought himself!

  4. Debbie the Instagram trial was rolled out in Canada but not to every account. Here as well some people became very upset, but I have decided to just go with the flow. If one is working with a company apparently the stats can still be shared although I’m not exactly sure how.
That’s quite the snowstorm your area is having. It makes me realize what will be coming to us in just a few months.

    1. Yes I heard the changes to Instagram weren’t too popular, so I’m not sure if it will stay like that or just be an experiment. Enjoy your summer, winter will come soon enough! Thanks for your visit and comment Sue 🙂

  5. Hi Deb – another great round-up. I wonder how all the influencers feel about not being able to see their likes? I’m still glad I’ve stayed off the IG bandwagon – my ego doesn’t need the hits! Same with the FaceApp thingie – a friend of mine put up a pic of himself and George Clooney and commented on how well the App worked – gave me a smile for the day! And I think I’ve become the 4th monkey! x

  6. WTF is what we exclaimed regarding using that face ageing app, boggles the mind. Haven’t people become so gullible? A definite NO, thank you. As far as Instagram goes, it is like using the cloud, just another place to store photographs and why not share them. Though the ones where I see the people showing numerous photos of their egotistical selves or what they had for breakfast is not an artist and totally boring and I am no longer a follower!

        1. Yes it’s much the same here today. I’m off to the doctor for an annoying cough that’s been developing for the past week or so, but in the meantime I’m staying warm and cosy inside our warm house. Good luck with finding the perfect recipe 🙂

  7. I’m seeing pictures from the face app more and more on my FB feed. Not a fan. Plus, I’m not all that excited to give an app permission to rummage around in my photos. Good to know about snow in Australia… I’ll definitely plan my future trip accordingly 🙃

    1. I’m with you on that score Janis! Yes snow in Australia is a real thing and well worth seeing. It’s often weird seeing all the summery photos from the northern hemisphere while we’re freezing cold in July but that’s what makes the world go around! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂 . Enjoy the weekend ahead!

  8. Until reading Claudette’s comment, I didn’t realize that there had been a change to the number of like on Canadian Instagram accounts. That tells you how much I follow it.
I just heard about the “Face Aging” App today. I’m also in the no thank you category. 🙂

    1. Hi Donna, yes I had heard the removal of Instagram likes was starting in Canada as a trial and now it’s here with us. It’s causing some consternation that’s for sure but I’m not bothered! Likewise no to the FaceApp 🙂 . Lovely to hear your thoughts as always!

  9. I haven’t done the Face app thing & won’t be giving my biometric data to anyone. I think the likes thing on Insta is a step in the right direction & find it hilarious that so much of my feed at the moment is filled with people telling me that even though I can’t see the likes on their account I should still double tap. Seriously? As for the article by Glover, I giggled my way through that when I saw it. So so true. I remember those winter nights in Bombala, Tumba & Canberra & even Sydney has cold mornings & overnights. It might be a hot country but we still have winter.

  10. I have zero interest in the faceapp thing. Pfff…

Here in Canada the likes count in Instagram was replaced with “and others” as opposed to a number. I don’t care really, I don’t aim at stats but rather at story telling. 🙂
