Winter Solstice number 2 for the year!

Winter Solstice #2 in the Northern Hemisphere

Today is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and from now on the days start getting longer, incrementally, as in a second or so each day.

Back home in Australia it is the longest day of the year – and what a summer it’s been already downunder. We are reeling whenever we hear or see the news about the bushfires, smoke and extreme heat. It couldn’t be more different over here in England with so much rain and green everywhere.

We woke up in England this morning, after a lovely week in Hungary staying with our Rotary Youth Exchange student Anna and her family. Their hospitality and generosity were humbling and we loved seeing their country through their eyes. I will try to write a post to share some of my photos in the near future. Suffice to say it is a beautiful country and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

This photo was taken this morning as the sun rose at 8.14am – I haven’t edited it in any way, it really is that green over here!

Winter solstice #1 in the Southern Hemisphere

Back in June we were visiting our youngest daughter in Queensland and on the day of the winter solstice we were in Noosa. I took this shot and couldn’t help commenting that it didn’t really feel like winter at all – we even went swimming! Which winter solstice would you prefer?

A new decade is around the corner

As we head into the final straight towards Christmas and the New Year, I wish you all the best and hope you can find some stillness in your days.

I’m not sure what 2020 will bring me, apart from a new granddaughter and my 60th birthday later in the year.

I have no real plans for my blogging so will probably just continue plodding along as I have been. It suits me not to be too organised!

I do have a word of the year in the back of my mind so will probably write more about that in the next little while.

In case I don’t get to write again this year, please take care of yourselves! Thanks for all your support and comments, I really appreciate having you all in my world.

  1. Happy Holidays Deb…you are the galavanting granny! Interesting about the 2 solistices. And terrible about the extreme weather in the southern hemisphere. I shall pray for rain! Best to you and your family for a healthy and happy 2020.

  2. I love how you share your world with us all. The fact that you take us places I will never see and do such credit to them is lovely.

    I feasted on that green scene for a bit.

    I do hope you have had (and continue to have) lots of catch up times with your youngest GD and of course, got to see your older one via some media.

    Next year, ANOTHER grandchild to welcome. Love is having grandkids I say!

  3. Quite the contrast Debbie! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and so looking forward to following your adventures in 2020. As a side note we are in the planning stages of a trip to NZ in early 2021. I had saved a note from you about rail trails so would love to chat more about that in the new year.

  4. Hi Deb – quite a contrast isn’t it? You’ve certainly experienced a variety of weather in the last 6 months. You are so organised having written your WOTY post already I’m just in the thinking stage but it’s bubbling away…merry Christmas to you. I’m enjoying snuggly cuddles with little Dottie who is growing bigger everyday!! She is so adorable but I’m also missing Emilia back at home who will be more into the day this year. I can’t be in two places at once so thank goodness for technology. All the best to you xx

  5. It’s been so hot here, I really miss the cold weather although having said that after a few days in the motherland in winter, I’d be moaning that it was too cold! The contrast in the two pictures are amazing, though aren’t they? It’s been great getting to know you this year and I’ve enjoyed reading your posts, especially the kismet one about your chance encounter! Hope you have a fantastic family Christmas and that 2020 is super, smashing, great!

  8. Hi Deb, how wonderful to have had a week in Hungary! I look forward to hearing about that and seeing some photos. I would love to experience a winter solstice in England. Can’t say which I’d prefer until I’ve tried both! It is SO green over there. The drought and fires over here are devastating and very scary.   9. I’d prefer the cooler version. I’ve not had a white christmas or been in any really cold weather. I’d probably hate it if I did experience it but I’m not a fan of our hot summers so winter is appealing!

    I’m enjoying following your exploits from here!

    1. Thanks Sue, it was a great experience and we hope to visit again one day. We’re enjoying our time with our daughter and Dottie, she’s going from strength to strength which is the best present I could ever wish for. Look forward to catching up in 2020. xx

    1. Thanks Clive I loved the contrasts which made me think about sharing the shots in a post. I’m not doing much blogging at the moment while on holidays so this was a good way to share some thoughts. Happy Christmas to you, it’s been great connecting with you throughout the year.
