Jump into the New Year with me

WOTY – The Big Reveal

Over the past few years I have chosen a WOTY (Word of the Year #oneword365)  and I try to stick with it as a theme or focus for the year.

It’s different to setting a new year’s resolution and I don’t find it as restrictive or punishing. I also don’t want to change myself too much these days, and resolutions or starting over seem too much like hard work, I just need to tweak a few things and keep my focus. A WOTY helps me do this.

Once again I thought long and hard and considered lots of other words, but in the end I settled on:

JUMP

Why the word Jump?

I wanted to choose an ‘action’ word this year and recently I have been drawn to things that have the word jump in them. This includes the song in the M&S Christmas advert, and the fact that I like jumping in puddles, despite being 59 years old.

I tend to take notice of things that jump out at me (see what I did there?) and so followed through with choosing Jump for my word of the year for 2020.

Do you do something similar?

A metaphor

Jump can also be a metaphor for life and what I’d like to achieve this year. I have started a list and so far I have these ideas. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

  • Jumping into a new decade
  • Jump for joy
  • Jump in puddles
  • Jump as movement
  • Jump at opportunities
  • Jump in feet first
  • Jumping fun
  • Jump at turning 60

Jumping in puddles

Jumping in puddles as I approach my last year in the 50s

As I wrote in a recent post , this is how I want to go into my last year of being in my 50s (I’ll turn 60 later in the year) – jumping, splashing and having fun whenever I can. It’s not always easy but I know I’ll try my hardest.

Don’t worry about getting old, worry about thinking old!

I always remember my father telling us kids to take our shoes off when we walked home from school in the rain, mainly so that our school shoes wouldn’t be ruined by jumping in the puddles, but also for the fun of splashing all the way home. It’s something that’s stayed with me and ever since, I can’t walk around a puddle, I have to jump in it.

Jump for Joy

My family know how to jump for joy too 🙂 We’re a jumping family!

Previous WOTY

You can find my previous words in these featured posts – I always enjoy reading back over them to see what sparked my choices at the time.

2017 – New Horizons

2018 – Focus

2019 – Time

So what’s next?

I’m going to review my WOTY each month – what I’ve managed to complete or maybe new things to add to my list.

I’ll try to be aware of my WOTY and enact it at every opportunity. I’m hoping it will help me focus.

I’m making a Spotify playlist of songs with Jump in them, so far I have quite a few – including Jumpin’ Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones, Jump by Girls Aloud, Jump Around by House of Pain, Jump in my car, an oldie from my youth by the Ted Mulry Gang, ump (for my love) by The Pointer Sisters, Val Halen’s Jump – just to name a few. If you have a Jump song please let me know so I can add it to my playlist.

What about you? Will you jump in and join me?

I’d love to have you join me, either by sharing your WOTY in a comment or by following along with me as we jump our way through the year.

A new day, a new month, a new year and a new decade – it’s all happening! Wishing you all the best for 2020, I can’t wait to see what it brings 🙂

  1. That’s a good one. It reminds me of a Steve Harvey podcast where he talks about taking a leap, jump. Action words are a good way to spark something in you. I love that you’re heading into your last year of 50s jumping into puddles. I’m gonna have to join you on this ride. I take it you’re gonna be dropping some mad knowledge on your 50’s adventures.

  2. Deb, Interesting how you have been drawn to the word “jump.” I can see how there are many layers to this word. I like all of your photos, and especially the jump for joy, ones. The word that jumps (hee hee) out at me the past few months is “trust.” It is also a word that can mean many things on many levels. Two years ago, I also had Time. I look forward to connecting and sharing in 2020. xx
