What I heard this week

Have you got your listening ears on?

So what have I heard in the last week?

I heard the birds, mainly cockatoos and kookaburras

I heard the autumn leaves rustling as they tumble from the trees

I heard from my daughters and grandchildren

I heard from my mother, sister, mother-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephew and other family members

I heard from a Rotary friend who is more than happy to check in on my mother-in-law (she lives alone a few hours drive away from us), she is isolated at the best of times, but even more so these days, with little family support around her

I heard from lots of locals who are enjoying the newly opened rail trail, the fun family time, the exercise and the autumn weather

I heard the cry from my body to stop, rest, relax and obeyed the request

I heard some interesting podcasts while out walking in the forest

I heard some funny jokes

I heard some good news and I heard some bad news

I heard my heartbeat – always a good sign!

Family love

I heard some great songs

I heard from lots of friends

I heard some rubbish from around the world but I am trying to un-hear some of that 😦

I heard the words from the many books I’ve read lately

I heard Joe Wicks encouraging me in his daily workouts and I know he has the tightest glutes in the world!

I heard encouraging feedback and support

I heard the sounds of silence and it was quite comforting in a weird way

And I heard from many of you, in the form of views, comments and messages 🙂

Thanks to everyone for keeping the conversation alive, the connections we all have mean so much more in these strange days.

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow

They’ll learn much more that I’ll ever know

And I think to myself what a wonderful world

Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

Louis Armstrong song

What have you heard lately? Care to share?

Wishing you all a great week ahead. Take care and stay well. Sending virtual hugs to all.

Deb 🙂

  1. I’m glad the good things have outweighed the not-so-good things in terms of what you’ve heard this past week. I have been fortunate to hear wonderful music every day, the sound of waves today, hear from family and friends, sounds of birds and of course, my cats meowing! 🙂

  2. Sorry I’m late Deb. I loved your topic because now is the perfect time to be sitting back and just listening. I’ve been noticing the ocean and waves more. I’ve also started having chirpy visitors early in the mornings on my balcony (lorikeets). I’ve also heard the garbage trucks at 4am which is something I don’t want to hear at that time of the morning. Thanks for sharing at #MLSTL but more importantly thanks for writing about hearing and listening which is sometimes hard to do when we are caught up in life xx

    1. Thanks so much for your visit Sue and never apologise for being late! You have so much going on I just appreciate your visits when you can make it! I have been swooped by parrots lately and I love that flash of colour that goes by! I don’t think hearing the garbage men at 4am is a good thing. I found taking a moment to stop and listen was really helpful this week, thanks again for your visit and support.

  3. Hi Debbie, I thought this was a lovely article – and so thought provoking. It made me think about all the things I’d heard last week. We certainly hear plenty of birds in Canberra. And I must remember to listen more to my body! Toni x

  4. I think from my little corner of the world, it is what I haven’t heard. The school bus, the rush hour traffic, screeching tires of young soldiers’ cars running late to physical training at sunrise.

I have heard much wind. Too much to sleep through last night. Also enjoying the giggly conversations of families out for walks, the lawn mower for the first time this spring.

    1. Hi Leslie, that’s a different way of looking at it, what you haven’t heard! There’s certainly many changes to our lives isn’t there? I love the giggly conversations you heard, we live way off the road so I never get to hear people passing by. Hope you’re keeping well. x

  5. I heard from a friend who lives in Maine, we haven’t seen each other since I moved to Florida, but it was great catching up on the phone. Too bad she (a nurse) was self-isolating while recovering from what is considered a mild case of covid-19. Luckily, she’s on the road to recovery now.

  6. I love your perspective, Deb (as well as the beautiful cover image!), and yes, I’ve heard some wonderful sounds this week. As I was starting my day and reading devotions, I stopped to listen to the birds singing. They sing their beautiful songs day in and day out, no matter what’s happening in the world. It was a lovely sound. Thanks for this, stay safe and stay well.

  7. Wow, you have connected with a lot of people this week. I admit ours is very small. Our family doesn’t tend to call but we might facetime on occasion or send a text. My dad rings once a week. I have been playing What a Wonderful World on repeat recently!! Great minds.

Thank you for linking up for Life This Week. Next week, as you know…the prompt is Life Stories 1 and I KNOW I am seeing you there!! Denyse.

  8. At the moment I’m listening to next door’s toddler who has been screaming on and off since 5 am this morning and 5 am yesterday morning. I feel so sorry for them but this neighbour is one who doesn’t acknowledge our presence and will turn away if she’s in the driveway and it looks like I’m about to smile and wave – which I usually do. I want to bake and take her food but know I’ll be rebuffed and will still need to live next door to them. Having said that I suspect I’ll do it anyway.

    1. Oh dear, toddlers screaming aren’t much fun at any time fo the day for anyone! I would go ahead and bake and deliver some treats, I’m sure it will be well received. I know i wish I lived next door to you!

  9. That’s a great idea. I’m blind, so I pay attention to what I hear maybe a bit more than some other people do, but even so it’s easy to take some of these things for granted sometimes. Since there have been less people on the streets, I’ve noticed a lot more sounds of nature. The birds are singing more. Maybe they are enjoying the cleaner air.

    1. I’m so pleased to hear from you Kirsty and can only imagine how much more you hear compared to us who can see as well. It is so easy to take things for granted. Yes it seems the sounds of nature are coming to the forefront. Thanks for joining in, lovely to hear from you.

  10. I absolutely loved this post Deb. I struggled with this prompt and I like your approach to it. I’m not hearing many voices at the moment in isolation. But your post made me think of the sounds I do hear in a day.

    1. Thanks so much Jennifer, it’s funny because it was just a quick, off the cuff post I put together in next to no time but it has resonated with quite a few people! I appreciate your feedback and am glad you enjoyed it. When we stop we hear lots of things don’t we?

  11. When I saw your header image, my first thought of the animal was “Oh what big ears you’ve got?”. Then I got goosebumps reading to the end of your post because I was listening to Louis Armstrong singing What a Wonderful World earlier. I also heard gulls, ducks, geese and swans when I went for a walk. Take care, Deb. #lifethisweek

  12. You listened to your body – good for you! You certainly heard a lot of positive things this week. And un-heard some negative ones. Now I hear that Louis Armstrong song in my head. Thanks for the beautiful earworm! 🙂

  13. I absolutely love this post, Deb. After reading it, I stopped and really listened. Right now, I hear a clock ticking and the tapping of my keys as I type this. Yesterday I heard thunder. I heard the voice of a dear friend sheltering alone in his New York apartment. I heard my MIL’s much stronger voice as she is recovering from an illness. I heard music. I heard rain on the metal awning. I am truly grateful for all of my senses, and especially today for my hearing. Thanks Deb!

  14. Just sitting in the garden hearing the birdsong so clearly makes you realise how much extra noise there was before we were plunged into this new stay-at-home lifestyle. However, there was one day last week it seemed that all I heard in the garden was people jet washing their patios 😉

    1. Funny the things you hear Deb, like people washing their decks 🙂 I love the quiet time and it will be interesting to see how we ease back into it once restrictions are lifted. Thanks for joining the conversation.

  15. Lovely sentiments Deb, I think we are probably hearing much of the same things that you are. The day to day world around us here seems quieter and slower than it used to be, the result of lockdown I guess, but it certainly gives us time to walk and think and chat and just enjoy nature. Hope you’re keeping well.

  16. With so much (white) noise around, it’s important to listen to the things that matter, isn’t it? Thanks for the reminder, Deb. Hope you have a great week x

  17. Deb, a good reminder of the simple things in life are more rewarding. For us, it’s hearing the tuneful Tui more loudly without so much traffic. PLUS, we can hear ourselves think while out and about without so many folks around. For every down, there is an up. I think that’s how it goes. Have a good one X

  18. Hi Deb – I haven’t heard much out of the ordinary this week. It’s been quiet everywhere – what I am enjoying though is hearing people say “Hi” and make a small comment as they walk by – nice to see so much more interaction while we’re all appreciating our time outside.

  19. Hi, Deb – What a great post, and an awesome reminder to listen!
Today alone I’ve heard sealions, geese, my dog sighing — reminding me to get up and move, jokes, good news, voices of friends and loved ones, as well as the full Together at Home special. All in all, it was a good day!

    1. Thanks Donna, it is a great reminder to sometimes just stop and listen isn’t it? I love that you’ve heard sealions, geese…what marvellous sounds! I missed the concert but will try to catch up with it at some stage soon. Lovely to have you share!
