10 Ordinary Objects

Images in the time of Coronavirus

After the success of the family based photography challenge, the A-Z of Isolation, in April and Images by the Dozen in May, with the added twist of not being able to use any numbers in the photos…we then moved onto 10 Ordinary Objects.

Some of these I’ve also been sharing on Instagram.

1/10 Ordinary Objects: something you eat
2/10 Ordinary Objects: something you eat with - hand
3/10 Ordinary Objects: something you cook with - a prong
4/10 Ordinary Objects: something you see with - camera
5/10 Ordinary Objects: something you put on your feet - yellow boots

How it worked

We were invited to join the group, (no pressure was applied), and we received the list of 10 Ordinary Objects.

The challenge was to take ten photos in total, of ‘Ordinary Objects’ as listed below with my explanation in brackets:

  1. Something you eat (honey jumbles)
  2. Something you eat with (hands)
  3. Something you cook with (prong)
  4. Something you see with (camera)
  5. Something you put on your feet (yellow boots)
  6. Something you wash with (hand wash)
  7. Something you wear (scarves)
  8. Something you drink from (sippy cups)
  9. Something you find in the garden (leaves)
  10. Something (not someone) you love (view from my sunroom)

Just like the Alphabet and Numbers challenges, we had to decide what photos to take to represent each object according to the list. Then go out and take the photos!

Over a few Sunday nights, we all got together on Zoom and shared our photos from the week. It was a great way to stay connected, think outside the box and have some fun being creative. Everyone’s photos showed their creativity and the world around them.

It’s always great to see how others see things.

I always find these challenges just that, a challenge, which means I push myself to see the world a bit differently and to extend my thinking, but without overthinking it – if you get what I mean!!

Again, my talented sister and her husband are now compiling the photos into a magazine/book so we all have something to look back on from this time.

  1. I really liked this challenge Deb – a bit of lateral thinking or you could go completely literal too. Loved all your photos and the pops of colour.

  4. Hi Deb, I’m enjoying reading your challenges and seeing your images. You and your family are so creative and have found a positive way to cope with COVID-19 restrictions. Gosh, I haven’t had a Honey Jumble for years and can just taste them! Thanks for sharing at #MLSTL and take care. xx

    1. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the challenges Sue. We have all had a lot of fun doing them during this time. My daughter made the honey jumbles and they were fabulous!!!

    1. That’s lovely Donna! It was funny that mum and I both used scarves (independently of each other) for that prompt and in the number challenge, my sister and I both used 11 eggs. What the??? We now just laugh at these family coincidences 🙂

    1. Oh thanks Deb, I really appreciate that. It is part of the fun of being observant to what’s happening around me. Blogging has helped open my eyes to the everyday things too! My daughter made the honey jumbles and they were great!

  15. This is a fun and interesting post, Deb! A great idea! I will share more in future with you since we are working on something similar for our Friday meeting group. I really like how you describe the concept of “outside the box” and “fun being creative.” Have you also been use “Canva” to create collages? I have briefly started to play with this app. Thank you for sharing! xx

    1. Hi Erica, I have used Canva for some things but not tried the collages yet. I can’t wait to see what you’ve been working on with your Friday meeting group. I’ve enjoyed these challenges and getting into a bit of a creative groove. So pleased you’ve enjoyed it too. Thanks. x
