Are you a Xanthophile?

Are you a lover of yellow?

Do you:

  • Like the colour yellow in any form?
  • Have a bag (or two) that’s yellow?
  • Own a scarf (or two) that’s yellow?
  • Buy earrings that are yellow?
  • Wear clothes that are various shades of yellow?
  • Smile when you see a yellow sign on the road or path?
  • Think happy thoughts on a wet miserable day when you see a yellow buoy bobbing in the water?
  • Get excited when you see a yellow boat/car/bike/truck/bulldozer?
  • Think anyone who doesn’t like yellow is kind of weird?

Well let me tell you, if you answered yes to any of these questions – you too could be classed as a xanthophile. (You may be surprised to find that I answered yes to all these questions) 🙂

A xanthophile (from Greek xanthë, ‘blonde’) is someone who loves the colour yellow.

I would like to say I’m a ‘Woman of Colour’ in that I love colour of any type, but I didn’t want to be thought of as making an inappropriate comment or claim, although in some ways I am actually a woman of colour! I am fortunate to have an olive complexion due to my ancestry and find I can wear these colours quite well – I do feel for those who can’t!

I found out many years ago that I love colour. I wear black, grey and beige sparingly (yes I get that they can be worn as basics and go with everything, but I’m still not a huge fan), and love nothing more than popping on some colour to brighten myself up. I’ve written before about my love of orange and autumnal tones, so it really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that I also love yellow. My latest favourite is the mustard yellow that’s around at the moment.

Going Yellow for Sunday Stills

Terri’s Sunday Stills prompt this week is yellow. I’m currently in Queensland enjoying some family time and although most of the days have been warm and sunny, we’ve also had rainy cool days. Today for instance, we went for a 20km bike ride in the rain just for some fun!

The photos below show some of our surroundings – the marina nearby with a yellow boat, the yellow flowery bush growing on the fence outside our door, the yellow banksia on the bush next to our unit and my favourite yellow earrings.

Do you like my earrings? I’m a tea lover and spotted these earrings a few years ago at a handmade market – I love the fact that they are different to the usual matchy-matchy sets. They do match, in that one is the teapot and the other is the teacup but it’s this quirkiness, and the fact that they’re yellow, that makes me smile whenever I wear them. I have edited them here using an arty/paint theme.

  2. Mmmm. No, but a touch of yellow with some brights I like goes OK. My complexion is not made for yellow. I was in the Yellow House at HS..not my colour.

  3. Deb, Yellow is a colour of sunshine for me. I do like sunflowers. They remind me of one of my daughters for many reasons. I have not given yellow much thought, until now. Adorable earrings! You do look great in all that you wear!

  4. I do have a pair of yellow shoes which I purchased because my sister gifted me a yellow handbag but I don’t normally buy yellow. I love teapots and cups, those earrings would be perfect for me. I’m a light blue person. My whole house is decorated with shades of blue.

  7. Hi Deb – I’d love to be able to wear yellow, orange and red, but they just don’t work with my colouring. I’m more a pink, purple and teal girl. Love my sherbert colours too (kind of like a 90’s teenager!) Loved all your yellow pics – and that yellow jumper with the scarf looks amazing on you.

    1. You always look lovely in pinks and purples Leanne! Some sherbet colours can look sort of insipid on me but I persevere 🙂 Isn’t it good that we’re all different? Thanks for your lovely comment, that tunic and scarf is a favourite look in cooler months.

  9. I had a yellow bedroom (bright sunflower yellow) as a child, and I’ll be honest, it sort of put me off the colour as I got older….loved it when I was little tho. I am a lover of purple tho, so off to see if there’s a word for that….who knew there was a word? (obviously you did)

  10. Yes…I love yellow too. Whenever I go shopping for my clothes, invariably yellow catches my eye and I find out a reason to convince myself that this particular shade of yellow is a bit different from my collection. This color gives positive vibes… thanx for bringing this topic up.

  11. It’s yellow for me too..such a burst of happiness.As I read this I’m wearing a colourful dress predominately yellows, a mustard yellow scarf. Each spring have always planted a field of sunflowers. But I also enjoy autumnal oranges and browns!

  13. Up until a few years ago I would never have worn yellow – I think I always immediately thought of lemon or daffodil yellow but then I discovered mustard yellow and citrine and those shades have gradually started appearing in my wardrobe!

  17. Hi, Deb – Your photos are beautiful. I love your love of colour. I agree that yellow is beautiful. Sadly, in terms of clothing, it does not love me. My wardrobe is filled with black, white, grey and pink. Yes, you can call me a pinkishluver! 😀

  18. I was eating breakfast as I read this post – sweetcorn fritters – bursting with little pockets of yellow corn. What a co! Welcome to Queensland – it’s not often we don’t see the brightness of the yellow sun. 🙂

  19. It’s green and browns for me. Even though we have a similar complexion, I can’t wear yellow. It’s great for flowers but not for wearing – well, not by me at least.
    Living in Melbourne means I wear a lot of black. I actually don’t think I’ve worn anything with any other colour for months now. Even my workout gear is all black.

    1. Yes we are similar in complexion and many ways but you have a different palette to me and a different lifestyle. You have introduced me to wearing different shades though, like greens. I’d love to see you wear some bright colour just to see if it makes you feel more alive!

  20. YES that’s me, you can see from my picture! I love colours, but there is something special about yellow. We were walking back to our hotel one evening and passed a shop window full of large cuddly emojis – sadly, or perhaps luckily the shop was closed as I would have been tempted to buy half a dozen.

  25. Love yellow ….especially in sunflowers and daffodils…..when I was in my early 20s I had a yellow dotted Swiss dress that I loved! I haven’t bought anything in yellow for years and years! Maybe bringing more yellow into my life could be a pandemic goal!
