If you could rule the world for a day, what would you change?

I know I don’t usually post on a Thursday but it’s raining outside and I’m procrastinating. I should be doing something very important I’m sure, but I can’t remember what it is!

How would you answer this question?

This question was my choice in a recent blogging group chat with friends. We each have a turn of leading the discussion with a question of our choice. We’ve had some beauties over the months we’ve been getting together – online rather than in person of course.

I was surprised, but shouldn’t have been, at the diverse responses – from giving teachers, scientists, nurses, doctors the same payment and ‘value’ as ‘celebrities’ and sportspeople (effectively swapping their status) to making a Tardis-like machine available for quick time travel anywhere in the world (Dr Who fan?). Also an end to cruelty in all forms, making people be kind to each other.

One of my good friends, Sue, mentioned her answer to this question in her monthly catch up post Let’s have a coffee catch up for September and I loved her way of turning the question into how we all need to be the change we want to see in the world.

Kindred Spirits

Today is my youngest daughter’s 3rd wedding anniversary and a lot has happened in their three years of married life. They’ve actually been together for 10 years so they’ve done some of the hard yards already. I wish them all the happiness in the world.

I would love to change the world by having everyone as happy as we were back then 🙂

As I said in a facebook post today ‘A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity. The order varies for any given year.

Ain’t that the truth???

If I’m honest, I’m happy and kinda sad looking back at the photos and memories. Happy that it was such a fabulous destination wedding and the fact that they’ve had a baby boy this year but kinda sad that we can’t get together as easily as we could back then, we can’t even think about when we can travel like that again!

In the meantime enjoy this square photo of a stunning sunset in Fiji.

Becky’s squares theme this month is all about the word ‘kind‘ and so this is my challenge to you – kindle your imagination, inspire us with your thoughts and share how you would change the world!

I’ve managed to sprinkle the word kind throughout my post today without too much trouble and I’m happy about that!

What would you do if you could rule the world – even if it’s only for one day?

I’d love to hear from you!

  1. Hmm, if I could rule the world for a day, what changes would I make? I would somehow – maybe wave a magic wand – and have everyone in the world feel loved and because they do, have everyone follow the Golden Rule.

Congratulations to your daughter and her husband. Perhaps they have gotten some of the tough stuff out of the way these first years of marriage and life will be rainbows and sunshine from here on out.

  2. I’d like a worldwide shower of kindness. That this would be the thought people would wake with each day. How can I be kind today?
Such happy memories of the wedding in Fiji. I can see why the photos bring mixed emotions Deb. It must be very hard to be apart. Hugs across the miles.

  3. Great question Debbie. If I could change one thing, it would be that people everywhere would recognize that we are all connected–not just people, but all living beings. We depend on each other and should work together and celebrate our connection. Funny, that’s not what I thought I was going to say, but that’s what came out.

  4. My wish list would be more money at the beginning of life instead of the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. For example, education for all preschoolers, more courses on human development for all new parents [hopefully stop the circle of child abuse if they understood the development stages?]. Free contraception 🙂 More research for cancer and the environment. My list is so long and unfortunately I would’ve hated to be a politician I am not a leader, more of a supporter who tends to get very animated when it comes to some social issues!

  5. Happy Anniversary to your daughter, Debbie. I agree that wedding anniversaries are extra special. If I could rule the world (with a bit of magic), I would ensure that everyone remains as happy and caring as they were on their wedding day (assuming, of course, that they were all happy/caring on that day)! 😀

    1. Thanks Donna, it was a quieter anniversary due to having a baby but they still celebrated! I like your thoughts on ruling the world, you can be leader anytime you want 🙂

  6. I’d secretly get all the nuclear warheads in the world to be emptied of nuclear materials and replaced by blancmange. But as I say, it would be a secret, so the threat would still be there but if the threat was ever acted upon, we’d all just get covered by something sweet and a little bit sticky. We need to start building our blancmange arsenal quickly,,,,

  7. LOVE your quote! The one about anniversaries and celebrating the love, partnership, trust, and tenacity and how they’re in different order for everyone on any given year 🙂 that is an excellent perspective. What a great reminder! Gonna have to write that down and save it 🙂 thanks for posting that. In terms of your question I think empathy, tolerance and being humble is what is lacking so I’d probably boost and highlight that instead of this hatred, greedy, materialistic, power-hungry people in every facet of life. We’d probably be over the pandemic by now if that was the case and be a better society.

  8. what a wonderful post, and a very happy anniversary to your daughter and son-in-law.

If I ruled the world, and had the power to make things happen I’d think I’d want to focus on making things equitable and fair, but as I only have a day of rule then I’d insist that climate change has to be the priority for every leader following me

    1. I love your ideas Becky! One friend said she’d use her one day to make her ruling powers last forever, rather than have it end after a day. I thought that was very creative thinking! I agree completely with your thoughts on climate change and fairness for all.
Thanks for your good wishes, my daughter and I have been enjoying reflecting on her small but elegant destination wedding in Fiji 3 yrs ago. Great memories!

  9. I think at the moment the one thing to change would be a global approach to the pandemic and ways to combat it. Including stricter penalties against restriction-flouters. Oh and maybe throw in free doughnuts for all.
