Shout Out Saturday #18 – An up and down week

A big welcome to Shout Out Saturday

It’s not been the best week for us but there have been a few bright spots.

A bit like 2020 really.

My husband’s ebike, which was only 3 months old, was stolen off the back of the car where it was very much secured (in suburban Canberra) – unless you’re a thief determined to steal it in the dead of night that is!

What a blow it was to us, and then all the hassle of dealing with police, claiming insurance and the feeling of being kicked in the guts.

One of our daughters was unwell for days, ended up in emergency in hospital (not COVID related) and then had her credit card hacked.

Other family members were admitted to hospital, or are unwell – lots going on!

And on top of all that (there’s a lot more, but I won’t bore you), I lost one of a very special set of earrings. They were a tea cup and teapot and one is useless without the other 😦

What’s Shout Out Saturday all about I hear you ask?

Shout Out Saturday is where I invite you to join in by leaving a link or a comment to something that has had an impact on you recently:

You can leave a link to your own blog, or maybe something you’ve read on someone else’s blog, or tell us about your favourite blogger, or simply share some good news, or even just drop in to say hello….

Notes:

  • no strings attached
  • simply leave a comment below
  • check out any other links if you want to
  • use the hashtag #ShoutoutSaturday on social media
  • no need to get caught up in too much compulsory sharing
  • keep it family friendly
  • Saturday can cover any day of the week

But first a very appropriate quote:

A thief is a thief, whether he steals a diamond or a cucumber.

Indian proverb

So, as you can imagine, I had to dig deep to find some shout outs to share this week.

My Shout Out(s) go to:

1. My friend Leanne sent me this ‘jumping’ video

She knows my word of the year is JUMP and thought I’d like this video – it was just what I needed and brightened my day! I laughed and then wished I’d thought of doing it!

So a shout out to Leanne for being so thoughtful.

2. International Day of people with Disability

I wasn’t aware that Thursday 3rd December was International Day of People with Disability. IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

3. Insurance company

I never thought I’d be doing a shout out to an insurance company but after the week we’ve had, dealing with the insurance aspects of having something stolen was a much better experience than I was expecting. The people at GIO were caring, considerate and relatively easy to deal with.

I’m so pleased that I had taken out insurance with the ‘portable’ option so the bike was covered away from home. We now just have to find another bike to buy the Mathematician and bikes are relatively scarce at the moment.

Some good news

And then an email popped into my inbox at just the right moment.

  1. Sad to hear about your tough week Deb, horrible having something stolen and then even worse having family being unwell. Life is a rollercoaster isn’t it, lots of ups and downs to handle as we career along. Hope this week is much better.

  2. Sending virtual hugs, Deb. I’m sorry you had such a rough week. I’m happy that you still found some things to shout out about. That photo is so perfect; I’m not surprised it was selected for the short list. Congratulations on the well-deserved recognition. I am sorry to hear that your MIL passed away. I fear we are getting close with my MIL as well. May you be well supported and surrounded by love during this difficult time. Sending you my love. ❤️

  3. So proud of you and the recognition you have received for the bittersweet photo you took to represent ‘together’. I have similar photos of my sister and me standing outside the window of my mom’s assisted living apartment. But neither of us were as adorable as the subject in your photo.
Reading above in your response to Jennifer, that you lost your MIL last night. I am so sorry. What a tough week. What a sucky year. Thinking of you, the Mathematician and your family and sending up prayers for your comfort. XO

  4. Oh Deb, I’m so sorry to hear about Grant’s ebike being stolen. What a rotten thing to happen. Thank goodness for insurance companies. I’m also sorry to hear about your sad family news. Life’s certainly thrown a lot at you lately. But, on the plus side, congrats on your photo nomination, that’s awesome! Big hugs for a better week ahead. xx

    1. Thanks Miriam it’s been an awful time. Grant’s mum passed away last night so we are all trying to comprehend life without her. She’s been sick for the past 6 months but we hopes she’s be with us at Christmas at least but that wasn’t to be. I’ll gratefully accept your hugs. xx

  5. Good grief about your week, Deb. And, then I just read the other very sad news. Keeping private until you share more. I wish I could give you an infinite hug.💔

Leanne’s video also brightened my day.

Huge congratulations about being shortlisted for the November ‘Together’ photo competition in Australian Photography magazine. You know I love this photo! Poignant, moving, and it captures the love and reality of 2020. I will be voting and sharing everywhere.xx

    1. Thanks very much Janis, your support is really appreciated. It’s even more poignant now because my moth-in-law (inside the aged care facility) passed away last night. I’m glad we have this beautiful memory of a moment in time.

        1. Many thanks Janis, it’s been quite hard especially at this time of year and after all we’ve been through so far! But that’s life I suppose.

  6. Hi Deb, it sounds like you’ve had the week from hell. I hope life improves for you. My shout out is to the wonderful Palliative Care team at the Gold Coast Health Service. We had a Clinical Nurse come to my parent-in-laws’ house for an initial visit. My mother-in-law is in the final stages of lung cancer. The Palliative Care team are so amazing, and we’ll be able to get all the help we need. They do such wonderful work they deserve a shout out.
I just released a light hearted post about my Mood Boosting Playlist for Midlifers – it might help you deal with your stressful week! https://midlifestylist.com/2020/12/04/mood-boosting-playlist-for-midlifers/

    1. Hi Christina, the week got worse as my mother-in-law passed away last night after a battle with oesophagus cancer for the past 6 months or so. The palliative care team were very good and I’m happy to read that your MIL is being looked after so well. I agree they need a shout out! I’m off to look at your post now. Thanks for sharing for #shoutoutSaturday. All the best to you and your family.
