A big welcome back to Shout-out Saturday
Happy Saturday to to you!
It’s time to share some of your favourites with us.
I started #ShoutoutSaturday during 2020, as an attempt to share some good vibes, have some fun and to allow you to share what you’ve found interesting or entertaining during the week.
I’m continuing on with it this year and will hopefully spread some more joy.
But first, what does giving a shout-out mean?
A shout-out is a short public acknowledgement of someone or something, especially by name. It’s usually to recognise someone in appreciation of them or something they did.
So let’s get on with shout-out #2 for the year – so much to share, so little time!
Travelling under the Social Influence
This New Zealand ad about travelling under the ‘social influence is so funny! I know I’m guilty of some of these things, are you? Watch the clip below and tell me you laughed too:
Goodr sunglasses
I have bought a few pairs of these goodr lightweight and fun sunglasses, mainly for riding and running. They’re reasonably priced, light, colourful and fun, but after I had a few issues I contacted the company asking for suggestions. They were great to deal with and sent me these Pineapple Pain Killers as replacements. Aren’t they cool??
I bet you want a pair now too 🙂
Community Group Award for 2021
At the local Tumbarumba Australia Day awards our Rail Trail Committee were nominated as Community Group of the Year, and we won! How exciting is that?
There were so many worthy nominees and we recognise and congratulate them for their valuable work in our community.
The other good news is that Owen and Cathy Fitzgerald, who had the dream nearly 2 decades ago, were nominated as Citizens of the Year as well.
Winner of the best Community Group – The Tumbarumba Rosewood rail trail committee. After many years of hoard work negotiations, submissions and reports combined with countless meetings this group, headed by Owen Fitzgerald, finally saw their dream come true. The Tumbarumba to Rosewood” rail Trail was completed in April 2020. The fact that this is the first Rail Trail in NSW is a remarkable achievement and reflects the efforts and numerous frustrations experienced by this group. The result of their predictions, work efforts and site promotion can be seen by all. The recorded utilisation of the site is a true reflection of how this rail trail will remain as a long term tourist attraction. An economic asset for the shire. It will be the bench mark for any future rail trail development.
Photos show me with Cathy & Owen, accepting the award on behalf of the committee, and also my mother and sister were able to be with me on the day, so I got a photo of the three of us as well. It’s not all that often we are together!
Sea Shanty fun
My sister sent me this clip as she has jumped on board the Sea Shanty phenomenon and has become hooked on the various shanties being shared – it’s a lot of fun!
The singing style became a viral craze on TikTok this month largely due to a rendition of ‘Wellerman’ by postman Nathan Evans, whose online fame led to him quitting his day job after landing a major record deal. Source
In a year of surprises, one of the more pleasant was the recent runaway viral popularity of 19th century sea shanties on TikTok. A collaborative global response to pandemic isolation, it saw singers and musicians layering harmonies atop an original recording of Soon May the Wellerman Come by Scottish postie Nathan Evans.

The biggest shout-outs!
My daughter and son-in-law had a beautiful baby boy last week, Zachary, a little brother for Miss E, and we’re all smitten. There’s nothing like a new baby to make you go all gooey inside is there? I shared some photos in this Wordy Wednesday post.
The Mathematician has a birthday this weekend and I’m reminded of the song by The Beatles – When I’m 64 – I wonder why?
I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing him a very happy birthday!

Everyone has a story to tell!

Great family celebrations to shout out about Deb! New grandbaby and a birthday for Grant! Such a happy time. I’m giving a shout-out to my bookclub members who provide interesting conversations about the current book and also help me to learn and grow as a person – I won’t name them but they know who they are. xx

Hi Deb. I think I have one you would like. During my first job out of trade school, my best friend paired me up with a gal he knew. She was lots of fun, wanted to do a lot of the things I was doing and such. I enjoyed her company and we got on well for a short time but the relationship just did not have staying strength. It was a no harm – no foul break up but I learned later there was a whole other agenda in play. This is a bitter but sweet story.
It’s one of my 10 minute reads and I hope you like it.

I absolutely love good sea shanties! If they’ve gone viral recently, I’m delighted. I normally go to a concertina meeting in Sweden in April, and one of the players there (and he’s also the organiser) is a master of sea shanties. Just lovely!

Deb, you had me laughing one minute and in complete awe the next. I had not seen those Sea shanty videos and now I can’t stop listening. Traveling under Social Influence is simply hysterical, and very true. Congratulations on what looks to have been a banner week for you.

I always love everything about your Shout-out Saturdays, Deb. It is nice to share some of the good on our planet. The New Zealand video did crack me up. Congratulations again, on the community award and especially your new little love, Zachary.

Oh you are so lovely Erica! I agree we need to share good stuff to offset all the bad stuff. Zachary is going really well, as are his parents, but at this stage he’s into sleeping, feeding and pooping with some crying thrown in, so Miss E isn’t too perturbed about his arrival thankfully!
I also enjoy reading Liesbet’s blog and read her book Plunge late last year – what a story! Thanks for the shout-out and I hope others enjoy reading Liesbet’s blog. x

Congratulations on the rail trail award! That is awesome. So nice that you were recognized for all of your hard work. There are several rail trails near me. They are such nice places to ride bike and run where you don’t have to worry about traffic.
And congratulations on the new grandson too! Wonderful!!!

The Social video puts me in mind of insurance commercials that are running in the states for Progressive Insurance, about Dr. Rick, who teaches classes to new home owners who are becoming like their parents! I still can’t get enough of sea shanty collaborations! The simplicity, the harmonising, the layering of voices, the good natured collaboration that adds richness and a sense of communal sharing and togetherness and mostly the lack of auto tune, big budget productions and girls wearing virtually nothing as they ‘dance’ … oh goodness. I’ve just officially outed myself as an old lady!! Oh well. Sometimes it’s good to enjoy the simple things.

Thanks Denyse, I agree with you, a huge shout-out to all the teachers getting ready for the year ahead. It seems ages ago that we also went through that but these days are very different.
