A blogging buddy, knowing my word of the year is Bold, sent me this quote she’d found. It was a lovely gesture from her and the quote is spot-on for me this year. Isn’t it nice when someone does this sort of thing, it shows they are thinking about you. Thanks Leanne.
4. Book club x 2
I’m fortunate to be in two book clubs – one is online with a group of 3 fabulous bloggers and the other is a local face to face, once a month, more traditional book club. Both give me a sense of happiness, in different ways and this meme sums it up nicely!
Are you in a book club or two? Let me know what you’re reading at the moment if you are. Our on-line group has been discussing Wuthering Heights in segments, not all at once, and it’s been a real eye-opener and a great learning experience. My face to face book club has just read The Godmothers by Monica McInerney and will be discussing it Sunday afternoon at our next get together.

Shout Out Saturday is where I invite you to join me by leaving a link or a comment, to something that has had an impact on you recently.
I started #ShoutoutSaturday during 2020, as an attempt to share some good vibes, have some fun and to allow you to share what you’ve found interesting or entertaining during the week. We need all the good vibes we can get at the moment.

Everyone has a story to tell!
Deb is a young-at-heart & active 60+ blogger/retiree, after being made redundant from her 22-year career managing education programs in a men’s correctional centre (jail). She now spends her time reading, blogging, riding her ebike and travelling. Deb was awarded a Bravery Award from the Queen when she was 17 after a tragic accident – a definite life changing moment! I seem to keep missing your posts! Loved this one. I’ve just finished reading Invisible Girl by Lisa Jewell, for bookclub, my choice. Very good page turner. Next up is The Lost Dictionary of Words. Have just finished watching Money Heist – so so good, edge of your seat Spanish drama. I’m also in a Games Group where seven ladies from 40 to 67 meet and play games, such fun and so many laughs. Loved your zoom cartoon.

Deb, I’d much rather be starting my career today than during the 70’s. My daughter works in a mostly male field (finance/law) and faces very different circumstances in her workplace than I did. For that, I am truly, truly grateful. Progress is being made, but we can always do better. Bigger, better, bolder!

Oh me too Suzanne, the trials I went through in my job in a very male dominated correctional centre would make for an interesting book, should I ever decide to write one! I am grateful to be out of that world these days. I agree, progress is being made, but slowly!

I love the idea of a book club. I’m not in one right now. I did join an online book club a couple of years ago but it didn’t get going. The woman that was supposed to run it was a very busy executive that just didn’t have the time and the books that were selected for the first six months were not anything I would choose. I did read about three of them and tried to participate but it’s tough to do when no one else is. But I really like the idea.

I joined a book club in November…I did join an online one as well…the first one will be in person when we can meet but has been zoom for the last two books. We’ve read All the light we cannot See and Anxious People. The other bookclub we read The book of lost friends. They’re all really good

Deb, I am with you. I have had the emotional card (embarrassed with tears) thrown at me at work. Yet, we still get’r’done…..efficiently, tactfully…..our feathers do not have to be colourful and on display. A wonderful quote, via Leanne. “…art of bold surrender…” Wow! “…you are far from finished yet.” In some ways, Deb, you have just begun. A great post! Happy Valentine’s Day.xx

Love your Shoutout #4 Deb. That video really hits home. I’m often told I’m crazy for running and especially running marathons at 63. I just shrug it off and know that I am a role model for my family and others and running makes me happy. I also love my bookclub and the connections we make through discussions about the book and life in general. x #weekendcoffeeshare

Hi Deb. My wife and I have been in a book club before with several great people all who were very different than us and it was amazing. Each month we had a great visit and a great read (well except for a few bombs). But everyone moved away and we never rebuilt the experience, but we have always been voracious readers. These days I’m reading Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin and some day I want to be able to write as he does. I always knew to be a great writer, I’d have to read great writing and Mr. Helprin nails it.
As for my callout. I’m going to go with a phone call I had a few days ago with a relative who had just read one of my stories. She was a type of performance artist when she was younger and my story spoke to her somehow. Anyway, she’s had some challenges and I was able to give her some peace that day.

Hi Deb. Thanks for giving it a read and for your kind feedback. I read for two reasons. 1) Just for the joy of words going through my brain forming stories and thoughts and 2) to learn tricks and techniques to be a better writer myself. My “Spinning Girl” was one of my first attempts to paint images that caused my readers to think through the how and why of such a situation. I do think Mr. Helprin need not worry about me catching or surpassing his quality of work, but his path so far has proved to be fruitful to follow. please come back for more. You will always be welcomed at my story site.

Fun post! My shoutout would be my recent discovery on Netflix. It’s called Grace and Frankie. There are 6 seasons. Lily Tomlin makes me laugh out loud with every episode. I highly recommend it any time you need a laugh!

Love the video, Debbie. It speaks volume. It took me back to my late school years when I told a teacher and my parents that I wanted to do cookery lessons. The teacher told my parents I was crazy and that I should be doing woodwork, not cookery! Now I look at all those amazing chefs, many of whom are male, and wonder if they were ever told the same thing as the women and me in the video you shared.
This week, I’m sharing a shoutout for a great blog post by Rob of Rob’s Tech Talk about privacy on our phones and tablets. It really opened my eyes and made me check who and what I’d given access too for my personal information on these devices. Do you know who or what is tracking your every move?

Hi Deb, that Nike ad really resonates with me. Women athletes need to be so much more determined than men and they don’t get the same recognition. I’d prefer to watch women tennis players like Ash Barty. My shoutout is to my Exercise Physiologist Charlotte who is slowly getting me strong. I didn’t realise that there was so much involved with rehabilitation after surgery. Have a lovely weekend, Christina

I love the Nike video that you have shared here. It’s so true and applies to numerous different situations, in so many different ways.
What is called ‘crazy’ by some, often translates to ‘visionary’, ‘leader’, ‘survivor’ (or a combination of all three).

Yes it’s a fab video Jen and as women we can probably relate to it very well! Book clubs are such fun if the group gets on well and has trust in each other. The worst things is feeling like you’re being judged.
