When I started thinking about the colour teal and wondering how on earth I could write a post about a colour I rarely use, I spotted this post on my daughter’s Dottie Wombat Instagram account.

She wondered why she’d never thought to use coral writing on a teal background before – how’s that for serendipity?

World Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day – 8 May

Rare Ovarian Cancer (ROC) riders came to town this week, having started their 900km ride in 9 days, in Canberra just days before. They were riding to raise awareness and vital funds for research into Ovarian cancer.

They were welcomed by the Bendigo Bank and supported by many businesses in town. Two of the support group accompanying the cyclists came to our Rotary Club meeting to talk to us about Ovarian Cancer and share the ups and downs of the 12 riders.

In sad news the tour had to be called off today, on World Ovarian Cancer Day, just 120km short of the finish line due to Covid affecting 4 riders and 5 support crew. The group managed to raise in excess of $130000 which is fabulous and the riders are committed to finishing their ride when they have recovered. Wishing them well.

The water in Fiji really is this clear – a lovely teal/aqua colour and perfect for this week’s Sunday Stills prompt.

As the temperature is dropping here I’d love to go back to Fiji!

The Owl

A few years ago we were in Bath UK where they had an owl sculpture trail around the city. I enjoyed tracking down the owls and documented the story in this post – A Hoot of a Time in Bath. When looking through my archives I spotted this teal coloured owl called Speculo.

Mother’s Day

Unrelated to the prompt this week is the fact that it’s Mother’s Day here in Australia.

I’ve had a lovely weekend with my mother and my sister, the three of us together for the first time in over 18 months. I also had calls from my three daughters and my four grandchildren wishing me a happy day.

I shared this post on my Facebook page and thought the quote to be perfect.

It’s a big job being a Mum and then a Grandmother – and you never stop learning! Remember, you’re doing a great job and no-one is ever perfect – don’t buy into that hype. Just do the best you can on any given day, some days are definitely harder than others! Wishing you well.

Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had, and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed.

Teal isn’t a colour I usually have in my colour wheel but I’ve embraced it this week and shared some very different teal images. I love a challenge!

So to answer my title’s question – what do an owl, a beach, a mug and ovarian cancer have in common – the answer is teal!

  1. I remember the Bath owl trail. I have a photo of J. K. Owling named after a rather famous writer who was born locally.

  2. I did wonder how you were tying all that together! Those owls are a hoot… Ovarian cancer is a silent killer so it’s great that a group has banded together to ride and raise funds but sad that Covid stopped them. Better a light bash with Covid than ovarian cancer though. We had a strong young man here called Terry Fox who lost his leg to cancer and he decided to run across Canada to raise funds. He only got part way before the cancer returned and he subsequently died. His family kept up the fundraiser to this day and it has raised millions for cancer research. One person can indeed make a difference. Take care. Bernie

  5. Good on those cyclist for raising awareness on Ovarian Cancer. We too have had a large media awareness drive to get people chatting about it. Such a hard one to diagnose. Good to see Mel doing so well with her business.

  10. What a beautiful way to honor the fight against ovarian cancer by tying it into your post for the monthly color challenge, Debbie! The mug is beautiful and was an amazing inspiration for this important post. I’m sorry the ride was cut short but the money they raised is extraordinary! Your teal images are gorgeous.   12. Teal’s a pretty colour (and I loved it on the Dottie Wombat mug) but we don’t use it a lot either. I looked around and nothing teal leapt out at me. I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for teal over the week ahead!
