Cherry Season
And by little things I mean cherries 🙂
Usually the cherry season at nearby Batlow is from late November through to January, but this year it started a bit later and one of our favourite cherry farms, Mouats Farm, only started picking on December 16 2022. Batlow is well known for it’s fruit, mainly apples and cherries, and has the perfect mix of climate, altitude and soil. Have your heard of Batlow Apples?
We have eaten far more cherries this year than in other years and OMG they have been amazing – huge, sweet and addictive. They’re not the cheapest fruit at about $16 a kilo depending on size, but so delicious not to mention healthy! You can also take your own container and family and friends to pick your own for about $12 a kilo in the height of the season. I see they’re now offering 5kg boxes now for $35, mainly for jam making.
Some people like making cherry pies, cherry jam, fancy fluffy cherry snow/custard/cakes/clafoutis type things, but for me, I don’t need to do any food preparation, I just pluck them out of the fridge and into my mouth! Love an easy recipe 🙂
Seriously have you seen how many cherry recipes there are on the internet?? I just did a search for fun and am amazed!!
Another little thing to cherry-ish
My youngest grandchild turned two in January, I can’t believe the years have rolled by so fast, but it’s been an interesting few years since he was born so in other ways I’m not surprised. I cherish him and all my grandchildren and love nothing more than spending time with them whenever I can.
We celebrated at my daughter and son-in-law’s house with a simple BBQ with their closest friends in the backyard and I even took some cherries along to share! It was fun having conversations with young parents (who aren’t my own children) and hearing about their issues, concerns for the future and of course their children.
Zachary was more interested in his new dinosaurs, trucks, lawn mower, scooter, books and baby doll and of course his Tommy the Turtle birthday cake made by his mum and dad with a little bit of help from me – I got to put the markings on his claw feet and his smile, plus put the smartie eyes on, and I offered artistic direction when required – little things I know but very important!
I also got to make the Fairy Bread, which as you know is a staple at birthday parties – I’ve featured this culinary masterpiece before for a WOYP post – Celebrating Birthday Parties with Fairy Bread

Love the tradition of fairy bread. And, my sisters and I also had spitting contests with cherry pits.

I am eating so many cherries. Just fresh but they are sooooo delicious! Still not cheap but cheapish for cherries…I can’t get enough of them.
I didn’t get the word play (I might be a little hung over) until I saw Sue’s comment. Ha! Well done!!
How cute are 2 year olds? The 2-4 age is may all time fave. Got so much personality bursting through, and you can truly engage with them. Lovely!

They really are fabulous this year Lydia! Yes 2-4 year olds are the best although my daughter might not agree with me at the moment 🙂

I haven’t had cherries in a long time, Debbie. They look delicious! I don’t care for cooked cherries of any kind, but fresh picked…yes please! Also your grandson’s birthday looks delightful. I can’t believe it’s been two years already!

Thanks for your visit Christie, the cherries have all finished now so I’ll look forward to next year’s crop!

Hi Deb, Fun play on ‘cherry-ish.’ I get it and it makes me smile. I also like getting together with different generations and learning from each other. I learned about ‘fairy bread’ the past few years from my Australian friends.😊 My grandchildren love it! Great photos and a fun post! xx

First of all, big congratulations on the excellence of the fairy bread construction…real 100s and 1000s and diagonally cut using white bread. Glad the birthday party was awesome. I can only eat a few cherries at a sitting, if at all, and tend to go for the blacker-ones but I like your recommendation and I have always enjoyed apples that are from Batlow! I do miss the way I used to eat fruit. Sigh. It was great to see your post shared for this week’s Wednesday’s Words and Pics. I am grateful for your support. I hope to see you next week too. Thank you. Denyse.

Oh I like my fresh cherries best plain and straight of the fridge too. No baking with them for me; thanks. It sounds like you had a wonderful birthday celebration too.

My ideal snack Joanne, nothing tastes better than fresh chilled cherries during summer.

Oh, cherries! So tasty. My husband loves them and can get kgs of them when we’re in Italy and shop at veg stands. (Perhaps we should get a cherry tree)

I’m crazy about cherries! I have them frozen during winter. The big ones we call “bings”, is it the same for you? I’m also a sucker for cherry jewellery and designs on clothes!

Hi Gail, I hadn’t thought of freezing them! No I’ve not heard them called ‘bings’ so that’s a new one for me.

Cherries – yum. They’re grown not far from us…about 30 mins away in the Yarra Valley. Farm gate shops and pick your own are fun to visit in season, much better than the supermarket. Have to wait for next season now.

Yes I agree Cathy, they’re much nicer from farm gate shops and we always make it a social event and enjoy a chat!

Though we both enjoy cherries, they were way too expensive this year to contemplate. Love the birthday cake.

Those cherries look glorious! We don’t grow them around here so I’m afraid the quality we get isn’t as good as it would be where they are grown. Happy birthday, Zachary!

Hi Deb, I’d never head of ‘Batlow’ cherries but I do love cherries! I don’t like those glazed cherries though that you often get in cakes. Happy 2nd Birthday to your grandson Zachary – what a cutie. Love the cake and of course the fairy bread. I always had fairy bread for my birthday as a child and my kids loved it too. Ahhhh the joy and innocence of childhood! Have a great day Deb! xo

I love cherry season Deb. We always buy them from a grower near Myrtleford when we do our Christmas visit. Like you I prefer to eat them uncooked. I love your photos today. Family fun is oozing out of them

Some of my earliest memories are of buying cherries from those farms and eating them in the car on the hot drive back to Merriwa in the days before air-conditioning. We’d spit the pips out the windows cos we believed that if we swallowed them cherry trees would grow in our tummies. Then when we got home Mum would preserve the rest in glass jars so we could have cherries and ice cream in winter.

No we didn’t do that Jo, not that I can remember anyway but I do remember being told we’d grow a cherry tree if we swallowed the pips 🙂 Nice memories for you…
