Welcome to Wordless Wednesday where I let the photo tell the story

Thoughts?
Where’s Deb-orah the Explorer?
I’m currently out exploring a new area (for me) on the NSW South Sapphire Coast and am enjoying some quiet time while the Mathematician is hiking the Nadgee Wilderness Walk with some mates.
Have a great week!
Deb 🙂

What is it with Aussies and their thongs?? There were a couple of trees looking just like that right on the river bank in Echuca – one was removed not long ago – hopefully the other wasn’t ‘washed away’ in last year’s record flood. It was fun looking up and wondering how someone managed to pin one right at the top…..and what did they do with the other one?????

I know Cathy, we seem to have a weird love for thongs don’t we? Apparently this guy collects thongs that have been left on the beach and attaches them to the pole outside his house. I too wonder how he gets them up so high 🙂

So over here we call those flip flops, so when I saw the title “thongs” I was thinking something else. Of course, I am in Florida at a resort and have been looking at a lot of different bodies in different bathing suits. 😁

I know the problem Carla, we often have to modify our language when travelling as things have different meanings :). Makes for a bit of fun though to see who comes for the flip flops and who comes for the other ‘thongs’ then add a pole into the mix and well…..

Yes Carla flip flops is another name for them but we stick with our word thong despite the ‘other’ meaning of the word :). I bet you see some interesting bathing suits in your area!

This year in Florida, I saw more cheeks than ever before. 😮

Not my cup of tea – but I guess every locality needs its version of the Giant Prawn to feel like it has a tourist attraction – this one would’ve been very cost effective I imagine 😀

It’s an interesting one Leanne and not to everybody’s taste as you say! The guy who lives in the house behind the pol, collects all the thongs left at the beach and attaches them to the pole, he probably thinks he’s doing a community service and it does get some attention 🙂

Hi, Debbie – I absolute love that Thong Pole. And all of the colours in that pic blend together perfectly!

It’s an interesting attraction all right Donna, and shows some of the character of those who live in the area who collect thongs on the beach and pin them up.

I love that pole! I have to admit I thought it was going to be something else! We always called them thongs when I was growing up. When I was teaching, I mentioned wearing my thongs, and you would have thought about 25 ten year olds were going to lose their minds! Obviously, the term had changed to flip flops for them! I love when everyday items are turned into something as cool as this pole! Thanks for sharing it!

I know Marsha the word thong has several meanings and I admit I was keen to see reactions :). I’ve never called them flip flops, goes against the Aussie grain to do that!

That’s definitely an attention grabber in the UK because here a thong is an item of ladies’ underwear! What you call thongs is flip-flops to us. I remember when I worked at a US company there was an edict issued for the US sites, “No thongs.” We wondered how they would enforce it!!

I know Gail so I was expecting some reaction 🙂 Funny work statement, that would have been hilarious!

It was very random Michelle and well worth sharing with others especially when ‘thong’ has different meanings around the world 🙂

LOL! I’m afraid to tell you what I’m thinking… when I heard “thong pole” I was not thinking thong sandals (known as flip flops here!); my mind went in a totally different direction. BUT, I love this thong pole. It’s so cute.

Yes I know where you were heading Joanne :). The guy collects discarded thongs on the beach and puts them on the pole outside his house, so he’s doing a community service in a way!

As several others have mentioned, “thong” has a different meaning around here, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Of course, when I was growing up, we did call flip-flops thongs, so it wasn’t totally unexpected.

Yes Christie, I intended that difference of the meaning of ‘thong’ just to make things interesting!

Like others from abroad (to you) I wasn’t going in the right area. Then my eyes saw the pole but really registered the fact that there are 3 old cars on that street. Like cool old cars. Now of course I wonder why? Bernie

I can imagine where you were heading Bernie and I deliberately let others think what they wanted from my title 🙂 The cars were part of a car club touring around and i ran into them a few times. I like the old world effect the give my photo too. Thanks!

We do love a thong monument Deb. I remember seeing one somewhere on Gold Coast last time I was there. It made smile as did your thong pole. I also love the cars in the background

Yes we do love a thong monument Jen! The cars were a Vauxhall car club touring around and I ran into them a few times. It gives my photo a bit of a 50s look doesn’t it?

Ah the interesting responses you got when you mentioned ‘thong’….and so typically Aussie to make a spectacle of something we are all very familiar with. I am loving your pics from the Sapphire Coast. Yes Denyse, and I did expect a few who think ‘thong’ is only aa piece of underwear! I had a great time at the coast and found some great views and explored lots of different areas. Thanks for following along.

Hi Deb – only in Australia LOL:) I must admit when I saw your title I wasn’t sure which type of thong you were talking about. I’m laughing as I wrote that last comment. xx

Yes Sue, only in Australia!! The term ‘thong’ is a bit controversial but works well for my post 🙂

There are a few of these around. I don’t mind them and I like the messages on them when they are to loved ones (or lost ones) but I don’t really understand how or why it started….

I’ve not seen any others Lydia but like the idea in some weird way – the bloke collects abandoned thongs at the beach and puts them on the pole outside his house. Not sure how long it’s taken him to get this many up there though.

Oh, foot thongs like flip flops. I thought it was the stringy panties. I don’t understand those things.

Yes Antoinette, the foot thong variety :). A guy collects abandoned thongs left at the beach and pins them to the pole outside his house.
