Time for a short break – why I’m going to attempt a blogging/social media break

Out of Office

It’s been a while since I’ve taken a break from blogging and social media and some of my friends/family tell me they don’t think I can do it!

Well, we’ll have to see about that 🙂

Time To Take A Break

Updated travel plans

In a few days we will be travelling – just not to where I thought we’d be going – but there’s a story there!

You may remember I had made plans to revisit New Caledonia to try and get some closure of my ill-fated trip when I was 17 and a tragic accident ended in the deaths of three people. Our school excursion was evacuated after just a few days and I’ve never been back.

In January I bit the bullet and booked a trip for a week in June. In mid-May riots and civil unrest erupted in Noumea (the capital of New Caledonia) and I thought things would be sorted by the time our trip rolled around…but no, things haven’t settled and we were not prepared to put ourselves in danger by going. The warnings are still to ‘reconsider your need to travel‘ and as we had travel insurance we did reconsider and ended up cancelling our plans.

This was a very hard decision – it was hard to initially make plans to go back and I started preparing myself for the return and then I had to decide not to go at all. With just days before our scheduled trip our travel agent worked magic and we are now booked for a week on Norfolk Island for the exact same dates. We’ve not been there before and I am feeling quite unprepared on one hand but excited for the unknown on the other.

Let’s just say it’s been a stressful time with other things going on in the background as well. I was determined to go away as we’d both cleared our calendars and were ready for a break away together.

The local paper asked me for my story this week, so I managed (with the help of my sister) to get some words together and it ended up taking up a whole page!!

Anyway I have decided that I won’t take my computer, if I can help it, and I will take a blogging/social media break. I’m busy trying to pack my bags and tidy up things in my last few days at home.

I’ve been busy putting the finishing touches to my Tell Us About post due on 20 June, so that’s when I’m intending to be back online.

Let’s see how I go!!

I’m looking forward to a week away, we’ve not been to Norfolk Island before and I’m sure we’ll have a great time exploring a new place. I’ll have lots to report on when I return.

Take care.

  1. Deb, maintaining your blogging schedule must take hours upon hours of dedicated time. It’s no wonder that you’d need a short break once in a while.

It is unfortunate that your plans changed, but nice that you found a good second choice. I love visiting places without pre-conceived notions of what to expect. Everything is a surprise. Have a great trip.

  2. Happy travels Deb – and I think you made a wise choice. Excellent news story too – you’re SO famous! Enjoy your break – I’m not good at being offline for too long, so you’re setting me a great example. 🙂

  3. I hope you have a fabulous time in Norfolk Island Deb. I’m sure you will have no problem at all taking a social media break. Internet is difficult on Norfolk Island. You can mainly only access wifi at hotels. You are able to buy it over there but it’s very expensive. Just a small tip – take the tour to Colleen McCulloughs house. Looking forward to hearing all about your holiday.
