Apples from Batlow
My friend Cathy (who always features in my foodie posts) was given some Batlow apples last week and shared them with her friends, as that’s the sort of person she is.
They were huge green Granny Smith apples! Funny story – my husband is a relative of the original Granny Smith and thinks it’s only fair that he be paid royalties by way of apple produce like this.
From apples to crumbles
I decided to make an Apple Crumble and found the perfect recipe in my RecipeTin Eats Dinner cookbook. I mentioned this great book in this post a while ago What’s for Dinner and in this post where I bought the book for my daughters (because it’s just so good), A Massive Fail and a Win.
The recipe calls for 1kg of apples – that was only 3 of these giant apples!
So I turned these apples into this:
It was delicious and the Mathematician appreciated it upon his return, fresh from the jungles of Papua New Guinea.
You can see the full recipe and a video here and it’s so easy because it used basic ingredients I already had in my cupboard. It turned out to be an easy way to use up a free gift of Batlow Granny Smith apples. The best thing is the topping is a lovely texture, a bit like a granola but softer and not too sweet and not too dry – just perfect!
It takes about 15 mins to prep, cooks for 40 mins, serves 6-8 and it’s suggested you don’t forget the ice-cream to serve it with! We’ve had it in the fridge and are eating our way slowly through it each night. So yummy 🙂
Here’s a quick summary of what’s required and what to do. This recipe was shared on the RecipeTin eats facebook page so is free to share.
APPLE FILLING
- 2 lb / 1kg Granny Smith Apples( green apples) , weight before peeling
- 1 tbsp flour , plain / all-purpose
- 1/2 cup white sugar (sub brown sugar)
- 2 tbsp lemon juice (or water)
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
TOPPING
- 1 cup rolled oats / oatmeal (quick cooking is ok)
- 1 cup flour , plain / all-purpose
- 1 cup (loosely packed) brown sugar (sub white sugar)
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- 125g / 1/2 cup unsalted butter , melted
- Pinch of salt
- Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F (both fan and standard).
- Apple – Peel apples, then cut into 1.5cm/ 1/2” cubes.
- Apple filling – Place apples in a bowl. Sprinkle with flour, sugar and cinnamon, then pour over lemon juice. Toss, then spread out evenly in a 1.5 litre/1.5 quart baking dish.
- Crumble topping – Place Topping ingredients in a bowl. Mix until clumps form, like wet sand (see video). Spread over the apples, crumbling with fingers if required to get that crumbly topping.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove, cover loosely with foil to keep warm and let stand for 10 minutes before serving (let’s the apple syrup thicken slightly).
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream!
I also like reading the notes she adds about each of her recipes and her videos are very useful. Currently my favourite recipe creator.
Best apples for Apple Crumble (according to Nagi)
I like to use Granny Smith apples because the sweet-tart palette appeals to me. If you prefer not to have tartness, then feel free to use sweet red apples.

I love apple crumble Deb! In fact, I made one today, and we have just finished devouring it. It was always my kids favourite too. I don’t have a recipe as I’ve been making it for you, but the recipe you used is almost the same. The only difference is I toss about half cup of cornflakes for a bit of extra crunch.

Oh the cornflake addition sounds a good idea Jen, thank you! Isn’t it good when you have a recipe that you just know so well and it works every time?

I know of the suburb in Sydney which lays claim to where Granny Smith grew the apples. It’s close to Hunters Hill and they have an annual festival. There was an Infants Reader we used at school too I think based on Granny Smith’s story.
You live in that close climate near Batlow and I always enjoyed Batlow apples. Sadly apples cannot be eaten by me unless grated (which I do from time to time) but I could definitely have a spoonful or two of that apple dish.
That would have been so nice for G on his return!

Yes we’ve been to the suburb and also to a few Granny Smith family reunions over the years. What a shame you can’t eat apples Denyse, I hadn’t thought of that as a by product of your many surgeries but it makes sense.
Batlow apples are the best!

Apple crumble is one of my favourite desserts, and you can ring the changes too, adding oats to the topping or raisins.

It’s one of my favourites too Barbara. When I made it again, I added sultanas to the oats and topping ingredients.

Your husband is a relative of the original Granny Smith!! Well how cool is that. My preferred apple type as it’s tart. I always decrease the sugar as I like that tartness.

Yes the amount of sugar required isn’t that much depending on what apples you use. Granny Smiths are perfect in this recipe. Thanks Bernie, I always enjoy having you along!

I love to watch baking shows and was watching an old episode of the Spring Baking Championship. They did crumbles, crisps, brown bettys, and buckles. I had no idea they were all completely different things! Your crumble looks delicious! My mom used to make the best rhubarb crisp…especially good warm with ice cream!

I’ve not heard of many of these names Marsha but if they’re all some sort of crumble then I’m in! I love rhubarb, it could be added to the apple too I suppose – maybe next time I’ll do that!
