A travel photography challenge when you can’t actually travel

Instagram travel photo challenge

Earlier this month my friend Donna, from Retirement Reflections, tagged me in a post on Instagram, inviting me to participate in a 10 day travel photo challenge sharing favourite travel photos. This was aimed at ‘virtual travelling’ looking and sharing past photos, to keep the memories alive, as none of us can travel too far these days.

It was far more fun than I imagined it to be! And not as depressing as I first thought 🙂

As we can’t actually travel outside of Australia at the moment it’s been lovely to look back through my photos of past trips and smile at the memories they brought alive. It was quite hard picking favourites but these 10 made the cut.

Day 1/10

This is me dancing under an Icelandic waterfall – as you do!

Day 2/10

A favourite trip with my parents, we went on a 10 day Bike and Barge trip from Paris to Bruges.

Day 3/10

Moeraki Boulders in New Zealand’s South Island – a surprise find and almost alien like.

Day 4/10

So many of our trips have involved cycling! This one was from our Sailing and Cycling trip around the Southern Dalmatian Islands.

Day 5/10

The magnificent sight of Uluru in Australia’s Red Centre – in our own backyard!!

Day 6/10

Standing on top of Australia’s Mt Kosciuszko! Doesn’t get much better 🙂 This made me laugh as it was mentioned in the video I shared on my #ShoutoutSaturday post – the spread eagle summit shot. You can view the funny Travelling Under the Social Influence New Zealand ad here

Day 7/10

A moody beach in Queensland – capturing the photographer in action.

Day 8/10

How spectacular are the views from the top of Cheddar Gorge? A natural wonder and well worth the hike up to the top. I consider Cheddar my second home and always enjoy a walk around the gorge area.

Day 9/10

Budapest at night – what a special time we had with our Rotary Exchange Student when we visited her family in Hungary!

Day 10/10

As it was the Mathematician’s birthday over the weekend I had to use a photo of the both of us doing what we do best – cycling holidays! This one was in the Netherlands, cycling up and out of Amsterdam. It was an amazing trip.

Where will you travel to when you can travel again?

Although it will be a while before we can travel internationally again, it’s a good reminder that we can travel anywhere by looking back at old photos. And there’s so much to see in our own backyard! Hopefully domestic travel will be the winner from these unusual times.

Have you taken a trip lately? Where will you go when you can travel again I wonder?

Which of these photos is your favourite?

Have a great week ahead and thanks Denyse, Terri and Becky for great prompts. I hope you’ve all enjoyed travelling with me 🙂

Thanks to Donna for the inspiration and for the lovely encouraging comments on my Insta posts!

Being bold is fun!

Notes about this post:

Terri’s Sunday Stills has the prompt Your Favourite Landscape, so I thought I’d (sort of) cheat and share this post, which does include some landscapes and these are all my favourites 🙂 You can see more landscapes by going to Terri’s post here. Next week’s Sunday Stills prompt is Fallen

Becky winds up her month of Squares today, and as some of my photos are indeed squares, I am linking up with her. The theme has been ‘up‘ and my post has been quite uplifting! It’s been wonderful to see how her readers have used the word ‘up‘ throughout the month, with their square photos showing real creativity. Squares will be back in April.

  1. I loved the pictures from Australia. I have been to almost 90 countries but not to Australia yet. Fingers crossed it will happen one day.
I really want to go to Jordan and the Ukraine. Both trips were planned for last year and did not happen because of Covid.
Thanks for sharing the pictures and keeping the travel spirit alive.

    1. Thank you Evangelina for your kind words. Hopefully you will get to Aus one day, but for the moment it’s hard to travel too far from home isn’t it? Take care and happy travels when we can start moving again!
