An update on my 52 Book Club 2024 Reading Challenge #WOYBS

Welcome fellow readers

It’s fair to say I’ve been a tad distracted this past month, with a lot going on, but I’ve still managed to enjoy reading some good books.

Reading always helps me to escape into different worlds.

Quote of the Month

Instead of a book of the month I’m sharing a quote of the month. I enjoyed Kathy Lette’s The Revenge Club, reading it with tongue firmly in cheek and not getting too wound up about it all. This quote appealed to me when I heard her talking about her book. I hope you have friends like this too, I know I’m lucky to have them.

Women are each other’s Wonderbras: uplifting, supportive, making each other look bigger and better.

So far in March/April

I’ve finished a few good books since my post last month:

Books March/April
Books March/April

📙The Last Summer – #1 The Wild Isle series – Karen Swan – BorrowBox ebook – 5* I really enjoyed this story of the St Kilda island and couldn’t wait to get hold of #2!

📙 The Stolen Hours – #2 The Wild Isle series – Karen Swan – BorrowBox – 4* Prompt #51 Related to the word ‘wild‘ for the 52 Book Club 2024 Reading Challenge (it’s book 2 of the The Wild Isle series) – I enjoyed this one but the first was my favourite. Apparently there’ll be a third one as well.

📙 The Revenge Club – Kathy Lette – Kindle Unlimited – 4* – Prompt #47 Self-insert by an author for the 52 Book Club 2024 Reading Challenge – a fun read!

📙 Devil’s Kitchen – Candice Fox – Kindle – 4* – Prompt #52 Published in 2024 for the 52 Book Club 2024 Reading Challenge – I enjoy Candice Foix’s books and heard an interview with her about this one, she has a certain style that makes me keep turning the pages!

📙 Yeah, Nah! – William McInnes – paperback 4* Prompt #39 Non-fiction recommended by a friend for the 52 Book Club 2024 Reading Challenge. My husband recommended it. and it was a good read about Australian words and how we use language.

📙 Anne of Avonlea – LM Montgomery – my hardcover book from 1972 – 5* I’m re-reading my childhood favourite series and so far the books are ageing well.

📙 How to Babysit a Grandma – by Jean Reagan – softcover – 5*

I’m doing quite well on my 52 Book Club 2024 Reading Challenge having read 26 books towards the challenge so far. That means I’m half-way there and it’s not even half-way through the year yet! As I’ve said before I’m reading a wider variety of books and thinking about what I’m reading rather than just picking up any old book, and I’m enjoying the whole process.

Currently I’m Reading…

Have you read any of the books I’ve mentioned in my post? Any favourites?

It’s always great to get recommendations from everyone who joins us for this linkup – I’m grateful!

One of my favourite books this month has been How to Babysit a Grandma – while I was baby-sitting my granddaughter!

My Rating System

Please note I’m fairly strict with what I give 5 stars to, so you can be assured that these are my favourites. It’s all about sharing the love of reading so I base my ratings on whether I’ve enjoyed a book enough that I’d recommend it to you once I’ve finished it. Obviously we all have different tastes!!

My personal rating code is:

  • 1* Did not finish/terrible – wouldn’t recommend
  • 2* OK not necessarily worth recommending
  • 3* Enjoyable – might recommend to the right person
  • 4* Really good – would recommend
  • 5* Excellent – definitely would recommend

  1. I noticed on Goodreads you are reading Tom Lake. I loved that book. It just spoke to me. Made me happy. Another book that has stuck with me since I read it is The Bird House. Beautiful, lyrical writing.

Bravo on getting so much good reading in. I have struggled this month to read much at all. Have only a week left in the month and have a long way to go on my book club’s April read.

  2. You are doing so well with all your reading challenges. I think I’m a bit behind on my Goodreads. I’ve been reading books by Lisa See, specifically about two sisters from China who flee to the US. It’s heartbreaking to read about how they are torn between two countries. I’m also rereading one of my favorite books from when I was teaching.

  3. Hi, Debbie – I am still on my blogging break until the end of this month but wanted to stop in and check out your WOYBS post (I was sad not to participate this month).

Congratulations on your success with your ’52 Book Club Reading Challenge’. You are totally rocking it.

I have been reading Howard’s End in bits and pieces when I could sneak in any small amount of reading time. I have 10 chapters left to go. I have found the writing to be incredibly beautiful (and very reminiscent of ‘A Room with a View’.)

I look forward to catching up with you soon.

BTW – I absolutely loved your Kathy Lette quote! So true!!

    1. I thought of you and the Stunners when I found that Wonderbra quote Donna 🙂 We missed you this month but know you’ve been keeping busy and will join us when you can.

Howards End has been interesting and I’ve got a few chapters to go no, I’ve been listening to it when driving around the countryside.

Can’t wait to catch up x

  4. I am going to have to keep The Revenge Club in mind; I still need self-insert by an author. You are doing a great job on your challenge and it looks like you’ve read lots of great books.

  6. As usual I will be adding some of these books to my ever growing tbr list. I have Devil’s Kitchen waiting to be read very soon. I agree with you that Candice Fox is great, but I think I’ve said that here before. I was very interested to see your challenge graphic too.

  7. I loved both Karen Swann books and can’t wait for the third one in the triology. I am so glad that Anne stood the test of time for you. And one of your favourite books is also one of mine — how to babysit a Gramma — did you know there is also one for the grampa in your life? The kids and I love reading them.

    1. Yes Bernie, I’m looking forward to the third one in the Wild Isle series too. We gave both the How to babysit a grandma and grandpa books to our grandson last year, they are so much fun!

  8. Another busy reading month for you Debbie, I don’t know where you find the time! I remember reading Anne of Avonlea as a child also. Karen Swan sounds interesting. I’m also a big borrowbox and libby fan. Hopefully I will be posting this month as I’ve missed a couple of months

    1. Yes it was a tad busy Ali, finding time is hard some days but I try to make reading a priority and with lovely autumn days it’s been nice to find a sunny spot and read. Thanks for your post, it was great.

  9. I’ve seen recommendations for two Benjamin Stevenson ‘everyone’ books so they’re on my list to read in Bowen.  I’m also interested in what you think of the ‘train’ one.

    1. I’m not really enjoying it that much at the moment but I’ll see how I go. I didn’t mind the first one which was written in a similar vein but for some reason this one is a bit harder to read.
