What does a summer whiteout look like? #SundayStills

Did you know we have whiteouts here in summer?

Just a tad different to those whiteouts of the Northern Hemisphere variety!

Summer downunder means sport to many people – cricket where the players generally wear white and play with a white ball, although they have been known to mix it up with pink balls and colourful uniforms. It’s covered on free to air TV so the temptation is there to sit and veg out.

Also tennis – they usually wear white and it’s a toss up between watching the tennis or the cricket – sometimes flicking between the two is the only way to go!

WHITEOUT!!!!

Then there’s the white sandy beaches and blue (almost) cloudless skies – a real whiteout that’s hard to handle let me tell you 🙂

And let’s not forget the indoor activities, when it’s too hot to go outside – jigsaw puzzles!

The Mathematician is known for his love of puzzles and inevitably it’s jigsaws he gets as presents from family members – and often the harder the better! They like to test him out.

He’s using a white cardboard base to sort his pieces and the white-on-white caught my eye this morning. It’s also interesting to note he suffers from some colour blindness.

Celebrating our wedding anniversary

Sticking to the white theme I can’t miss the opportunity to share a photo from our wedding (42 years ago), the anniversary of which we celebrated earlier this week. I will add that I was still theoretically a teenager at the time, at age 19!

Our white wedding outfits made me write a post a few years ago – That time when the Bride wore white and so did the Groom – a real whiteout!

There was also that family holiday where we had Christmas, which is usually hot, sunny and spent at the beach remember, skiing in the Italian Alps! Now that felt quite weird and all sorts of wrong, but it was so much fun!

I love capturing clouds – here’s a collection of my favourite white ones – some fluffy and some a bit menacing!

The colour white

Some people don’t see white as a colour, but more of a shade. While I love bright colours I am also drawn to white for its simplicity and pureness.

As Leonardo said:

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

  4. I love your white photos, Deb. Far from boring…these are delightful. You may recall, I love clouds…and beaches for that matter. It was fun seeing your wedding photo as well. 42 years…that’s impressive! It’s pretty astounding how many shades of white there are in this world. Good luck to the mathematician on a very challenging puzzle!

  6. I love your take on whites, Deb. White is such a natural color for January in the northern areas because of the snow. In California we rarely had snow. We haven’t had too much this year. I’m going to have to take a lesson from you to find some cool white photos. I love the puzzle one. It must be hard to do puzzles when you are color blind. The one he did would take me years!

    1. Thanks Marsha, it was fun sorting. out which photos to use and it really got me thinking. I love these sorts of challenges which make me think outside the box a bit. The puzzle will take a while I think!!

    1. Thanks Bernie, it’s not known for snow here, although we do get it in winter, so I had to go with the white beach photos I’ve managed to collect over the years.

    2. Thanks Donna, I was inspired by watching the cricket :). The puzzle is going to be a challenge, I’ll have to remember to post updates of his progress as he works through it, he won’t give up! Love your snow globe image too.

    So much fun and goodness going on in your post, Debbie! And I love your recreation and leisure perspective, especially your comment about spending Christmas in the Alps feeling all sort fo wrong, LOL! The white-on-white puzzle is a beautiful image but looks excruciating to complete! Your clouds are amazing and I love the beach images and long for some warm days there! Great idea to post your wedding pic–stunning (I threw in mine, too). Always so glad to see your creative and well-written SS posts.

    1. Hi Terri, I haven’t received another comment so it must have been lost in the ether! Thanks for trying again as I always appreciate reading your thoughts. Yes the summer lifestyle for us is very much leisure based, so it suited me well to mention tennis and cricket, then I started thinking of other ways we have whiteouts here in summer. I’m so glad you also used your wedding shot, it’s so beautiful to share these moments despite how long ago they were, well in my case anyway! The puzzle will be a WIP and a serious challenge but I have no doubts he will manage it. I couldn’t face it myself! I always get creative when thinking of how to respond to your prompts, it’s great for the brain, as I don’t do jigsaw puzzles. Thanks again.

    1. The girls love looking for ones they think he’ll enjoy the challenge of doing and also to try and stump him, but he does love it! Yes to us for being amazing and hanging on in there for the long haul!

  17. One of the best things about having a window seat on a plane is those clouds that seems to sit in the sky! Lovely post. My husband is a crazy jigsaw fan – must be because of their Maths teaching connections! Mine does WASGIJ – 1000 piece ones where you have to guess the image. I struggle with kids’ ones!

    1. That’s so true Denyse, it’s been a while since I’ve been on a plane now. but it’s a wonderful sight seeing all the clouds underneath! Yes the maths brain helps with jigsaws and I definitely leave them to him! Thanks for your visit and comment, always much appreciated 🙂

  18. Oh yes, I love your whiteouts … that’s the type of white December we know as well! Those lovely beaches and blue-blue skies! The only thing missing there is a white ice-cream 😉.
    And those amazing different clouds – spectacular! Happy anniversary – a real milestone! And so beautiful in white!

    1. Oh thanks for that! I had fun thinking of what I could share with the theme of white and I’ll admit it came to me as I was watching the cricket. An ice cream would have been a perfect addition 🙂
