Winter reading #WOYBS

Welcome to another month of What’s Been on my Bookshelf

I always enjoy these posts for a number of reasons – I like to share what I’ve been reading, I like to see what others are reading and I like the way we interact with each other regardless of where we are in the world. Reading is reading when all’s said and done!

Winter Reading

Are you like me and sit with a pen and paper handy when reading these posts, to take notes of what you think you’ll enjoy? I then go into my Goodreads account and add them to my Want to Read list.

What have I read since my last post?

Books read June:July 2023
Books read June:July 2023

Last month I wrote about reading while being on holidays and it was interesting to read comments saying how much others enjoy reading about an area they’re visiting. I must admit I’ve not done much of that before but when I was talking to some friends about our trip to Cornwall, they suggested The Salt Path by Raynor Winn, as a book I might enjoy. I don’t read a lot of books in this genre but I thoroughly enjoyed it, maybe due to having been in the area mentioned in the book and learning of their incredible story! I gave it 4 stars and recommend it as a memoir.

Good Reads Blurb:

Just days after Raynor learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home and livelihood is taken away. With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall.

They have almost no money for food or shelter and must carry only the essentials for survival on their backs as they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, every encounter, and every test along the way, their walk becomes a remarkable journey.

The Salt Path is an honest and life-affirming true story of coming to terms with grief and the healing power of the natural world. Ultimately, it is a portrayal of home, and how it can be lost, rebuilt, and rediscovered in the most unexpected ways.

Other books I’ve managed to read this past month:

Currently Reading

  • We’re still working our way through Homecoming by Kate Morton, it’s via Audible so we’re only listening on our longer drives which makes it a bit drawn out.
  • The Hike – Susi Holliday – Kindle
  • Bitter Wash Road – Hirsch #1 – Garry Disher – Borrowbox ( I think this is also called hell to Pay)
why I love books

Summer’s One Must Read Book 2023 collaboration

I’ve joined in with Carol’s collaborations in the past and nearly didn’t make this one due to being away, but I managed to dash something off to Carol and she was kind enough to add it to her post. It’s a great list of books recommended from a wide range of international bloggers and all the books listed are recent releases. Thanks to Carol for including me! You can read the post here and maybe you’ll find your next great read. Although of course for me it’s Winter Reading not summer!

      1. You set a great example to all. You get so much done. Your Word of the Year next year ought to be Superwoman. 🙂 BTW, are you going to write a short story this year for Story Chat. Your last one was fabulous and so well received. 🙂

  1. Hi, Debbie – Like you, I always look forward to this linkup due to the sharing, the discovering, and the connecting. I have had ‘The Salt Path’ on my TBR list for quite some time. Thank you for the nudge here. I read Kate Morton’s ‘The Homecoming’ as an ARC. I had a hard time putting it down and the story still lingers in my mind although I read it months ago. Welcome back home!

    1. I hope you like The Salt Path Donna, and I look forward to talking with you once you’ve read it, so we can compare notes. I can’t wait to finish listening to Homecoming, I need to know some answers to burning questions!!

  2. Hi Debbie – well you still seem to have got through a fair few books whilst travelling! The Salt Path sounds interesting, I’ve not heard about that one. I’ll be interested to see what you think of The Hike and Bitterwash Road. I agree with your reasons to love books on your graphic too. Thanks for sharing

  3. Salt Path is right at the top of my TBR… it is in fact the next book I’ll pick up. I have the sequel there ready to go as well. I can’t believe that next month will be our 2 year anniversary of this linky!

  4. Hi Deb, more good books to add to my list and at the moment I have plenty of time on my hands to read. As always I enjoy your posts and sharing co-hosting duties with you for WOYBS? The Salt Path does sound interesting and I’m trying to expand my reading to different genres. I have the 52 Book Club Challenge to thank for that. x

    1. Yes your 52 Book Club challenge has been a great way to broaden your reading from the sounds of things Sue, I’m tempted to join in next year. I always enjoy getting recommendations from friends and my stunning co-hosts. x

  5. Hi Debbie, I love this challenge as I get to tell other readers about the fabulous books I’ve read but also to receive ideas about new authors. The Salt Path sounds interesting. I’ve read all Gytha Lodge’s books and love them. I’ve read one of Garry Disher’s, keep meaning to read more. I’ve tried Kate Morton a few times but can’t seem to get into her books.
    I’ll link up now.

    1. Thanks Ali I have really enjoyed Garry Disher’s first Hirsch book and am keen to read more now, also the Gytha Lodge book was great. It’s such a good challenge as we all share so many different books, and often more than one will make me think, I want to read that! So good to have you join us.

  6. I’ve heard a lot about The Salt Path, keep meaning to read it. I’m interested to see where you get your books. I haven’t signed up for Kindle Unlimited, is it worth it? I’m finding fewer books on Netgalley lately.

    1. The Salt Path was such an interesting story Gail and perfect for me being over there. I might go on and read her next book as i see she has written more. The Kindle Unlimited membership suits me as we don’t live near any book shops and the local library app has free ebooks but not always the ones I want are available. I do buy some from Kindle and borrow from the library as well. I have a bit of trouble with NetGalley as many of the ones I want to read aren’t available. This mix of sources of books suits me well but it’s not for everyone!

  7. I am well on my way to meeting my reading challenge goal this year! I may even surpass it. But, I cannot, for the life of me, remember the book titles! I can tell you plots and characters, but titles have always eluded me! I will have to read through the “Summer’s One Best Read” list to see what I need to add to my TBR!

  8. Hi Deb, I love this linkup. Other than the connections of course, I love getting book recommendations. Like you, I add them to Goodreads. I’ve added a few from your post today. I was interested to see that you gave Becoming Mrs. Mulberry 5 stars. I’m pleased that you enjoyed it.

    1. Thanks Jen, it’s such a good way to get recommendations from friends isn’t it? Becoming Mrs Mulberry was a fabulous read but then I seem to enjoy anything Jackie French writes!

  9. I often keep my library app open and request books I see or else pin them to my pinterest board to request later. I enjoy reading books set in the place we’re vacation– a time or two I’ve even picked a vacation spot based on a book I previously read!
