    1. Good question!! It was called Hell’s Gate by the convicts as they were taken through the heads of the harbour to their penal colony. They must have felt they were entering Hell ad in some ways they probably were. Tasmania was very much a penal colony in the early days when European settlement started. The Aboriginals had managed to live their for 40000 years before they arrived though.
