When the granddaughter you were expecting turns into a grandson!

Globetrotting Granny update

You might remember I wrote this post recently – Why involving Grandma in your pregnancy is a good idea – where I was spruiking the news that my three daughters were producing three granddaughters – two have been born already and one is due in March 2020.

Well I’m here to say that things change!

After being told she was having a girl a few months ago, with the advice not to go and paint the nursery pink, a recent scan showed with the aid of a second opinion, that my daughter Eliza, was in fact having a boy!

There goes my 3 from 3 boast!!! Our family likes to keep things interesting, that’s for sure 🙂

Her husband is one of three boys and Eliza is one of three girls so it was anyone’s guess as to what they would have.

As I always expect a girl-baby, because that’s all I’ve ever known, to say I was gobsmacked by this news would be an understatement. I honestly thought my daughter was winding me up when she sent the message through. She assured me she wasn’t and they both seemed quite surprised and taken aback!! But happy too!

We’re all very excited to welcome a new baby into our family!

Luckily they hadn’t gone overboard with their nursery decorating, choosing soft neutrals with just a hint of colour, so there’s no real drama.

It’s now a case of getting used to the idea of a boy rather than a girl. This is a complete unknown to me after so many girl babies, but it’s something I’m looking forward to!

In the scheme of things it really doesn’t matter, a baby is a baby and will be loved whether it’s a boy or a girl, it’s just the change midway that’s caught me off guard.

I had been shopping up a storm in England, as Mothercare was closing down while I was there, and lots of bargains were to be had. I never buy too much in pink , favouring more colour and interesting items, but there were a few ‘frillier’ items that weren’t suitable, so Dottie was the benefactor of some new outfits courtesy of her yet-to-born baby boy cousin.

What’s next?

We have the Baby Shower to look forward to in just under three weeks time in Brisbane, Eliza finishes work and then the countdown will really be on! The Mathematician and I, just back from seeing one granddaughter in England and the other in Canberra, will make our way to Brisbane to stay for a while to help out.

Do you get the impression that I’m excited?? I can’t wait to meet my new little grandson and to be around to support my daughter and her husband. Just as well I don’t work anymore!

Has this sort of thing ever happened to you or someone you know? Let me know of your experience and if there were any issues. I’m sure it is quite common but I won’t truly believe it until the baby arrives 🙂

  1. And this is why you don’t do the painting! I’m like you with just daughters so when we had our first male grandbaby, we (me and my daughter) thought what are going to do with a boy? We only know about boys. But it turns out they’re every bit as delightful as the girls and probably more cuddly and affectionate. Whatever they are, they’re fantastic! A new joy to discover.

  2. How exciting! I have heard through friends that they were told baby to be would be x then later on or at birth they had a xy. Glad you didn’t go crazy with pink lol..Mothercare…gosh I remember buying my girls loads of mother care baby clothes – they are now on the Cabbage Patch dolls in a box. #MLSTL

  3. Deb there certainly is never a dull moment at your house. I can feel your excitement and share it. Three new babies is such a gift to a family. Now a little boy is coming to keep his little girl cousins on their toes. In our family it’s been boys. There are very few girls in previous generations also. When my daughter was born I was very shocked. #MLSTL Sharing

  4. Congrats on the baby boy! I have a son and a daughter and also a grandson and a granddaughter so I have no idea what it’s like to have 2 of the same.

  5. What fun!! You guys have the best attitude. I have two daughters who both had a daughter so we were thinking that maybe a grandson would be nice. But our third grandchild, born last week, was another girl. We are just thankful she is here and healthy and that mom/my daughter is doing well, too.
Can’t wait to ‘meet’ your new little one!!

  6. “Spruiking”, now there’s a word I’ve not read in a looooong time.

Aww, that kiddo is going to be full of surprises! Good job you didn’t go all out on pink frillies in the sales & the nursery is pretty neutral. Although as a baby I’m not sure how much they’ll really take on board. Not to get into the whole gender identity debate.. It’s going to be a busy time by the sound of it with heading to Brisbane for the baby shower soon. How exciting!!

  7. Exciting to be welcoming a third grandchild and whether its a boy or girl doesn’t matter at all does it? You will love them whatever and they’ll be part of the family immediately. No grandchildren yet for us but maybe one day. We had three boys and both only have brothers so never ever expect baby girls.

      1. We never expected to have anything other than boys when we started a family and actually nearly didn’t try for a third child just in case it was a girl. You get ideas in your head don’t you? Sometimes unrealistic and a bit daft.

  8. Hi Deb, Your post definitely made me smile. I have heard this situation happen in the past, although, infrequently. Like you say, everyone is excited to welcome a new baby into the family, boy or girl. This happened to someone I know here and it was only when the baby was born that the new sex was revealed. They were able to exchange a lot of the clothing. Excited for you!

      1. They were patient’s of mine. It became quite the story for them to share. Still rare. I love hearing about your family, Deb. I hope the Australia challenges are moving in the right direction. ( btw, we have a baby “boy” due in one month…….at least I think it is a boy) 😉

  9. Oh, wow! We just found out about a month ago that our daughter-in-law is having a girl … I guess! Maybe I’d better not buy anything particularly girly for a while. I’m sure they are right most of the time these days, though. With my three kids, I only had a sonogram the last time, and all my imaginings and intuitions about the first two were totally wrong. I got the opposite sex both times, but as you say, if it’s a healthy baby that pops out, that’s all that ultimately matters!

    1. Wow, that’s great news, huge congrats to you 🙂 . Things are very different to when i had my girls too! I instinctively knew I was having girls and would have been very surprised if I’d had a boy. Thanks for your comment and sharing your news with us.

  10. How exciting – and surprising! Scans are never 100% accurate so you won’t know for sure until he/she arrives – one of the sonographers was right, I wonder which one (although I think the most recent one would have found more ‘evidence’ of what they were looking for!) Looks like you may not have that long to wait to find out.

  11. We’re very happy with our two grandgirls (although I know their dad had hoped for a boy). A new baby is always a blessing no matter the sex, and a surprise in these days of having it all planned and prepared is a little bit exciting (and daunting). Friends of ours were expecting a granddaughter right up til the birth when “she” turned out to be a “he” – a surprise!! for everyone 🙂

      1. Back again for #MLSTL and I also loved the baby shower photos you shared – it looks like he’s going to be a big bouncy baby boy (very different to tiny little Dottie!)
Thanks for linking up with us and I’ve shared on my SM 😊

        1. Thanks Leanne, he is going to be quite big and is currently upside down (breech) with no desire to turn around 😦 The baby shower was fun with tow of my daughters, my mum and my sister plus Eliza’s friends and other family.

  12. Well, this is fun and exciting! Just read an article about an aunt who asked for all the money back on clothes she bought for a niece who turned out to be a nephew! Go Team Mint, I say.

  13. Wow! It just adds to the excitment. My cousin Chris, on Mum’s side was told about 13 years ago that they were having a girl and when his wife had delivered, the nurses said, “Congratulations; it’s a boy!” She was not impressed.

  14. I was invited to scan #3 after my DD 2 girls – where she hadn’t found out- because “this time” she wanted to know! No doubt at all that a boy was expected that time! I did go overboard with blue clothes for him that arvo! Enjoy the boy Deb! It is different but it is so special! Congratulations 💙

  15. Congratulations! You really are the globe-trotting Granny. I have to say that I wouldn’t know what to do with a boy baby either lol. As my mother would say “you really don’t have time to work!”

  16. I’ve always wondered if those scans are totally accurate! Our son and daughter-in-law and our daughter and son-in-law both wanted a surprise the first time round and then each couple chose to find out the second time. I have to say that it was more exciting not knowing. I wouldn’t have wanted to know when we had ours. With your three being so close in age it will be interesting to see if there’s a difference. We have three grandsons and one granddaughter – I’m not saying that tiny boys bomb around destroying things , but….
