The Twelve Days (of an Aussie) Christmas – #SundayStills

Christmas Song Lyric Challenge

I decided to use a popular Christmas song and illustrate it with photos from my archives, where I had them! You may not have heard this version before 🙂

The Twelve Days of Christmas

The book, The Twelve days of Christmas, illustrated by John Mcintosh and written by June Williams from 1986, belonged to my eldest daughter who was born in 1983. I found it recently in our bookshelves so decided to share it with you here.

It’s beautifully illustrated and has extra words telling more of the story of each gift. I’ve just used a summary here.

The twelve days of Christmas
The twelve days of Christmas

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me, an emu up a gum tree.

On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me, two pink galahs,

On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me, three jabirus,

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me, four kookaburras,

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love sent to me, six platypuses,

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me, seven koalas climbing,

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love sent to me, eight possums playing,

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love sent to me, nine wombats working,

There are quite a few of these Aussie versions around and this one is similar, but different, you might enjoy listening to it.

I hope you enjoyed that singalong! I have used photos of the relevant animals from my archives, just to brighten your day 🙂

It’s been fun to share some Christmas lyrics with you. Are you singing along now?

  1. This is adorable, Deb. I love the Aussie 12 days of Christmas complete with accent. It brought back some great memories. Some of your pictures would make great public art entries, too. So cute! 🙂

  2. Oh I thought this was marvelous. So well done. Makes me want to try it with our Canadian animals. We had Christmas in Perth one year (my b-i-l) lived there and we found it odd to swim and play in the ocean and have cold items instead of hot! But it was enjoyable. Hope this season you can see some family (I know it must be so hard not to be able to go to England). Take care. Bernie

  3. I am jumping for joy as I read this, Debbie, how much fun is this to read with all the Aussie creatures? I might have to borrow your words as a fun idea when I substitute teach in the lower grades in the next few weeks! So clever and cute and great images to match. I’m always impressed at your creativity but you’ve outdone yourself this time!

    1. Oh that makes me so happy Terri, I can just imagine you jumping for joy!! Honestly it took me next to no time to compile the post and I’ve been so busy lately I left it to the last minute on our Sunday night. I’m so pleased you enjoyed it and feel free to share any of it! Thanks so much for your high praise, it means a lot to me as it’s always such fun to get ideas and then implement them so that they work out!
