Beating the winter blues at the beach #SundayStills

I happen to believe Australia has some of the best beaches in the world but I’m partial to a beach anywhere!

Winter in Australia is a real mix – some places get snow (like where I live in the NSW Snowy Mountains) and Queensland gets slightly less humid with warm sunshine. Although as I said in a recent post The Gift of Sunshine, those up north thought it was quite cool at 21 degrees! But it’s all relative.

We’ve just returned from a road trip to Queensland, staying with family, and the weather was amazing – warm and sunny for the whole time. Now that I’m home it’s back to being properly cold with temperatures rarely getting into double digits – but that’s July where I live!

I could moan and groan about it, and sometimes I do, or I can smile and say ‘it’s invigorating’ and ‘you know you’re alive’, and embrace the need to dress in multiple layers. I do enjoy the cold weather but also appreciate the three weeks we spent up north dressed in t-shirts and shorts.

Many people, mainly grey nomads or retirees, take the opportunity to head north in their caravans and campers, at this time of the year for a few months to escape the cold, and I can see their point. We aren’t at that stage of life just yet but I do like going to the beach at any time of the year. Whatever works for you!

I love the way in Australia that the water, sand and bush meet – sometimes simply running into each other.

My favourite beaches are probably on the NSW South Coast, in Jervis Bay, where I grew up and holidayed with my family for many years. My own children have continued to enjoy visits to these beaches and we have spent many Christmas holidays on these sandy shores. So many memories created.

The sand is white and the beaches long and relatively empty compared to the famous beaches like Bondi in Sydney.

Dear Winter,

I’m breaking up with you. I think it’s time I started seeing other seasons. Summer is hotter than you.

It seems I’ve always been a bit of a beach babe! This is me as a child relaxing at the beach, at one of the already featured beaches in previous photos 🙂

I don’t know what it is about the beach but it definitely has a pull, it’s beautiful, it has strength, there’s a certain serenity in watching the waves and listening to the beat of the water. I now live in the mountains about 5 hours drive from the nearest beach, and don’t think I’d like to live at the beach, but it’s always mesmerising to me.

  1. The beaches here in Australia are absolutely stunning. When I first arrived here a few years ago, I had no idea there was snow, never mind places where you could ski. I always thought Australia was just sunny all the time 🙊. I love that we have all weather types here.

  2. Oh gosh love little girl Deb!! Living land locked maybe makes us bigger beach lovers? It becomes special instead of just the beach next door? I agree Auz has fabulous beaches and perhaps I will do a blog this winter about our first trip there. Bernie

      1. Perhaps this winter I will delve into the Auz New Zealand trip but I am always watching my media file usage as I am at 68%!! I already pay for blogging and seem far too cheap to pay for space!

  5. Amazing photos, Deb! I’m partial to white sandy beaches, like the ones in Pensacola Beach, Florida, where I lived for many years. The seaside in Europe is often pretty, as in Antalya, Turkey, but I’m partial to being near an ocean, like in the Canary Islands. Maybe it was what the oceans brought into the shore, like the seashells, and seaglass, that I enjoyed collecting. Thank you for sharing your beautiful, inspiring photos, Deb. The beaches are calling my name! xxx

    1. Thanks Denyse, the rain has been awful over on the coast, but we’ve been lucky here and missed it all. I need to look at the beach photos to stay inspired sometimes 🙂 I know the water has an effect on you too.

  8. Love that old pic of you… and isn’t it funny. I’m so used to beaches here where the water laps the sandy beach, and then I see pics overseas (and I guess in some places in Oz) where the water lies far below high cliffs overlooking the ocean. That view (on a cliff over the ocean) seems really appealing to me for some reason. Perhaps it’s cos I like looking at the ocean but no desire to go on the sand etc…

    1. You are very fortunate to live where you do with glorious views and beaches nearby Deb, although I think having to drive for hours to visit the beach I tend to really appreciate it when i get there!

  12. I adore everything about your post, Debbie! I’ve always felt Australia’s beaches are legendary, even to this California surfer chick. I can say that since we visited San Diego’s LA Jolla Beach area this week. I love your beach babe pic of you as a child, you even have to languishing posture down pat! Glad you could get a dose of warmth in the north (sounds weird in my northern hemi world). It was also fun to see a repost of your banner pic of you playing on the beach. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a good week!

    1. Thanks Terri, it was a case of choosing which photos from my archives not to include! I can see your beaches are pretty good too. My posing started at an early age and yes I agree, I have it almost perfect 😂

  13. I am also a beach lover and mesmerizing is the proper way to describe how it affects me. Although I know longer live very close to a beach, I make a few treks to the ocean somewhere somehow. Many moons ago, I used the beach as my therapy and escape … it can be quite healing when life’s handed you seemingly us surmountable problems! I’d always leave feeling calmer and with a plan of action and would keep moving forward.

    1. It is mesmerising isn’t it? I always love a visit to the beach too and make the most of it. It can be therapy and our family always go to the beach when dealing with sorrow. Glad to hear you also see it as a form of therapy and it has helped you moving forward. Take care.

  16. We certainly have beautiful beaches in Australia Deb – the ones over here in the West are gorgeous too – especially in the deeper South where the sand is white and so fine that it squeaks when you walk on it. Loved all your beachy pics x
