MOB update #1

An update from Mother of the Bride (aka MOB)

I am enjoying the planning that is going into our first family wedding and particularly my role as MOB. My earlier posts on this subject include Venturing into a brave new world and It’s official – I’ve joined the MOB and they set the scene to some extent. I’m quite excited by it all – in case you didn’t get that!

You may remember that I listed my MOB to-do list in a recent post titled Shall we Dance.

My list went something like this:

1. Grow my hair
2. Grow my fingernails
3. Get fit and lose some weight
4. Find a dress, shoes and accessories that are in keeping with my role as MOB
5. Help out with any decisions (if asked)
6. Learn to dance

• I am happy to let you know that my hair is growing, as are my fingernails (slowly but surely and I’m not chewing my nails anymore).
• I have joined the local family owned gym and I am enjoying early morning workouts and trying to go for a run/walk a few times during the week (weather permitting). I am feeling better for it too, I must admit.
• I have bought, and subsequently sent back, a delightful dress which unfortunately made me look frumpy (not quite the look I was going for). I’m still looking!
• I offered to take over updating the wedding website and my offer was graciously accepted.  I have since had a lovely time updating events, travel directions, venues, things to do, photos and stories to the extent that everyone is happy with my efforts, so I am a very happy MOB.
• Dancing lessons have commenced!!  My maths teacher husband has surprised us all with his enthusiasm for the project of learning how to dance and is treating it like a maths puzzle, complete with counting out steps and shapes.  We have improved in just two lessons and I feel confident that if the wedding was this weekend that we would not embarrass ourselves too much. We still have several months to go so we can only continue to improve!  It’s actually quite fun 🙂

My daughter has just celebrated her 30th birthday and I made her a photo book telling her story using photos from every year of her life so far.  It was a huge project and one that I enjoyed immensely as it gave me an opportunity to re-live her decades of childhood and teenage years through photos and diary entries.

One of her ‘phases’ included modelling, although it surprised us at the time due to her extremely shy nature.  It ended up being  a great way for her to overcome her shyness and one she embarked on without any coercion from us.  We encouraged and supported her all the way.  I came upon this photo of her in a wedding dress parade and included it in her birthday book as an example of how beautiful she  looked in a wedding dress.  She was only 11 at the time but already very tall for her age (which is why she was asked to model).

The wedding gowns were real dresses from real women, having been donated from local women to be displayed as part of a fundraising event.   They showed the vast range and design of dresses over the years and we all loved wearing them.  My daughter said that they made her feel like a princess. I also modelled dresses in this parade and the most special dress I wore on the night was my own wedding dress, the first time I’d worn it in over 16 years. It was a very special night for all of us.

I can’t wait to see my daughter look beautiful in her own wedding gown.
